Powerheads

It seems that the inexpensive ones like Jebao just don't have a very good record of reliability. That's part of what is holding me back on the Gyre, not sure of the relabilty and the cleaning rituals- but that is for another thread. Let's get back to the OP's purpose.

I haven't seen any that both turn/move and adjust their speed during operation..
One brand has a "cap" that goes on the end that rotates some..

There are return pipe parts (seaswirl,etc..) that rotate and I believe I've seen a kit that you can put a powerhead on that will rotate the whole powerhead.. But haven't seen an "all in one"..

For the cheap people (nothing wrong with that) look at Jebao PP series for a regular adjustable powerhead or CP series if you want a "gyre" style.. They are both "cheap" and the quality of the PP (or RW series) and the CP isn't bad at all for the price..
The older WP jebaos are junk and prone to fail..

I think this may be the direction I'm going. I like the looks and price of the PP series. I'll probably get these until I have enough money for vortech.

Also I really like the the looks of the seaswirl. I think in the end I will go with a seaswirl, and when I can afford them, a pair of vortechs.

The thing that sells me on the vortechs is the backup battery. I am terrified that if the power goes out for a few days, I'm going to have no way to keep this tank oxygenated. And from what I hear, I only have a few hours before everything is dead without circulation.

Personally I have very good luck with the Sicce Voyager Series of pumps, which are AC. You can buy their wave controller and will allow you to customize the flow in your tank, to a point.

I just jumped into the Sicce DC X-Stream wave pumps. They are more expensive but work very well, and if you upgrade to a Apex controller, they are compatible with the use of an auxiliary cable. The DC pumps really are the way to go.

The nice part is that the Sicce's come with a 5 year warranty. They are not the Cadillacs in the field, like the Vortech's, but are a good value for the $$.

Really if I'm happy with the jebao then flow is flow and a ups would do instead of a vortech.
yep.. the reasons for paying for a vortech are very few now..

and the question for a UPS is not "how much can you run on one".. Is "how long can it run X watts for"

One could keep a whole tank running for a few minutes..

Well I'll only need oxygen and heat. But the heaters are 300W. But i love in Ohio so in winter hat will be needed.

How many gph should i target. 60g dt. 30g sump.

In general 30 to 100x display tank size for "total flow" including return pumps..
75-100x for is SPS coral/HIGH flow tanks..

I like to go around 50X for starters..
FWIW.. I'm running a Jebao CP25 and PP4 in my 40G breeder.. Both around 75%

Thanks everyone for the help!

Really I just wanted to hear someone say they liked this brand or didn't like this one. I trust this community more than any shopping site reviews.

Thanks a bunch!

I just realized how much the seaswirl is.. I suppose it will wait until later as well.

Check out the Aquatic Life Macro Aqua Flow Swing.

I've been testing it on my tank and its holding up well. I purposefully not clean it routinely to see how much abuse it will take and I've been pleasantly surprised.

All for about $20.

If you are worried about a power outage as opposed to a short interruption, then a portable generator needs to be considered. UPS at the most an hour or two from what I read.

After losing power for 4 days, once with a huricane and once with an ice strom, I am glad I have a portable generator (6000 watts)

My personal experience:

Korilla - Long lasting efficent AC powerhead. No good on a wavemaker because they click. Good value and silent.

Maxspect gyre - Moves a ton of water alone when creating the gyre but left a dead spot in the middle of my tank. I like the form factor, less imposing than the korilla. Audible whine when used over 60% pulsing (YMMV).

MP-40QD - Moves lots of water in a very wide pattern, great modes, very quiet. Not the best value but by far the best watermover of the three.

All IMO.
