PPE discoloration

I got a single PPE polyp, and the purple face (for lack of a better word) has green speckles. I've read somewhere about someone else who saw this and what they did to make the speckling go away and become purple, but I can't find it in any of the forums b/c there are so may PPE threads. I think it was a lighting change, but can't remember. Anyone know? Thanks...

very intense light causes this speckling to occur. what light were they under from the place you got them? and what light are they under now?

Once the spekling occurs, it doesn't seem to go away. But if you move the polyps to a more shaded spot, the new ones coming in will not be speckled.

Thanks for the info! They came from ultimatefrags, so I assume they were under MH, but I don't know the distance or intensity. Now they're about 8" below my PCs, so I doubt that's too intense. I'll wait for some new polyps to emerge and see what they look like...

Interesting post surfnvb7, I was curious on what you meant by intensity? Do you mean as in wattage 250w or 400w? or spectrum wise 20K 15K 14K 65K? Check these out.

both wattage and bulb temp. also ballasts make a big difference in the intensity of the light. and SE vs. DE bulbs. alot of variables go into this equation.

those polyps you posted a picture of look like regular zoanthids with speckles.

we were specifically talking about PE type zoas (w/ the green slit mouth) that speckle under brighter light. they are a different species than regular zoas.

PE's are Zoanthid Gigantus. Zoanthids are Zoanthus sp.

so, same genus, different species. the speckles on yours are part of your morph and supposed to be there. they look cool though. ;)

surfn, thanks for the reply it breaks the monotony from all the ID posts. Looks like I got a new experiment to conduct. =) Thanks again for the input.
