PPE help needed
I bought one Purple people eater polyp locally from a well respected reefer last week. Its been a week and it hasnt opened.

Can any zoa/poly freaks out there tell me what i should be doing special for this polyp (I have other zoas/palys that are fine in my tank)--good flow, low in my tank (72 gallon with 6x54 SLS TEK 5 T5s). I have no doubt that the polyp was legit as the seller is a great guy so Im wondering what I am doing wrong...

Any ideas? How long till this thing dies on me?

Hey Wally,

I already responed to your thread in the Reef Disscusion board.

Does it have growth of any kind?

Is anything bothering it?

I had found the same issue with another reefer that bought local from me... He lost them and I replaced them and they would still not open in his system. Well I find out he keeps his tank at 1.026 to 1.027. I have him lower the salt content to 1.023 and BAM!!! they came to life and started babies in 4 days.

Might try that if your too salty...

sometimes PPE takes a while to open.. I've had a frag not open for 2 months, and when it finally open.. it was smooth sailing.. :)

as long as the polyps look healthy, I wouldn't be too worried..

just watch of any irritators or predators...

good luck..

Mine took close to 2 weeks to open I ended up putting the frag on the sand bed in a mod-low current and they opened a few days later.
but yea its annoying to sit and stare thinking come on you @#$@ open

I just recently got a frag of RPE's from a fellow reefer using MH's and I have a 8bulb 432 watt TEK T5s and they opened up the next day some opened a hr or so after being placed in the tank... There 1/3 ways height on the tank while acclimating to the T5s.

You should be cool with T5s as I have a bunch of zoos and palys getting good growth from them... some I have almost to the top about 5-6 inches from the water level.. T5s are 5-6 inches off the tank.

check out this picture, they are actually much higher on the tank now, the cherry rigged frag mount on the top back part of tank.

I have had a few polyps that would not open for extended periods of time after being introduced to my tank and I have found that putting them in a low light low flow area of the tank for a while usually helps. Also feeding them will sometimes get them to open

I got a frag from a friend that had not opened in his tank for 3 weeks. He actually gave them to me with some purchases I made from him. I put them shaded under my frag rack under vho lighting. In about one weeks they opened and are doing fine. He had them under T-5 lighting when I got them. They are in my 75 under T-5 lighting a little shaded and are doing great. I would shade them as much as possible to help them open.

Hope it works
