Prazipro??

Green Thumb

Just about to use prazipro on my tang to treat flukes or would that be flatworms?..

Just wondering if anybody has had experience with this product?...

Thanks.

I don't use it as a dip, I medicate my quarantine tank with it. One dose for 7 days, adding the appropriate amount to any new water that I add for water changes and top off. Then on day 8 I do a 50% water change, redose, and then go another 7 days. After the second course, day 15, I change 50% of the water in my quarantine again and add carbon to remove the remaining medication.

The store that sold me this product told me to give him a dip for 7 minutes with the recomended dose.

After 7 minutes I could see a bunch of flat worms on him and they werent all falling off.

I called the guy back and told him the fish doesnt look stressed and he suggested upping the dose by a few Milliliters and leaving him in for 20 minutes. But after 20 minutes I could still see flukes dangling on him and still wasnt looking stressed. So now hes been in for 2 hours and he doesnt look stressed, hes eating normal. Chasing nori and flakes around the aquarium. I did see him flare his gills once.. Should I worry?

So you do 2 weeks of prazi for every new arrival? or is this something you do to badly affected fish that you capture from your reef tank?

I caught mine out of my reef tank this morning couple of hours ago. He was pretty badly infested with the flat worms, looking all white pale and stressed, rubbing and flicking constantly, even got skinnier in the forehead area..

Well right now he has his collor back. Flicking way less.

Why do you do this for so long, do you figure is totally necessary?

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond, I really appreciate your first hand experience with this product.

Why

I have never used prazipro as a dip, so I can't help you there. Hopefully someone who uses it as a dip will chime in.

I treat ALL new fish with prazipro, and yes, for two weeks. I treat for so long because I have seen one week be ineffective, which as I understand it is due to the life cycle of the parasites. I would expect the dips to be less effective and since I can easily treat new fish in quarantine and I have not ever had a fish have an adverse reaction to prazipro, I don't see any reason not to do this.

I would not trust a dip if your fish has flukes. You are not killing the eggs you are just giving the fish some relief.I do the same thing as Gwynhidwy and treat all fish with two 6-7 day treatments of prazipro with a water change in between in a qt tank.

My fish has flat worms. Clear ones. My fish never showed any discomfort in his gills, so I assume there are no gill flukes. Am I right to think so?

I believe you are talking about the same thing. They are commonly referred to as flukes. They appear as clear buggers on the outside of the fish. Often missed unless you can see them in some bright light.

They can get in to the fishes gills, too.

If they are in your DT, then you really should remove your fish and treat them. The reason is that your DT now has become infected with them. You may catch a fish and give them a dip/treatment. But once they go back in they will pick them up again.

I don't know how long your tank needs to remain fishless for the flukes (aka flatworms) to die off. Hopefully someone else with that info can jump in.

You can treat your DT with prazi, but it will kill all the worms/feather dusters (inverts? - not certain) in there too. So you have to make that choice and be prepared for big water changes.

Hope this helps

Oh, one other thing. Not all fish react well to prazi. Some wrasses and angels don't handle it well.

When treating, I dose at 50% on day one and observe, then add the balance on day two if there are no signs of stress.

What fish do you have?

How do yo know that the amount of proziquantal in the water is enough to be an effective treatment? Is tehre a test kit for it?

Also how do you maintain your biological filtration with it?
