praziquantel in a reef?

Oh, and we aren't going to know for sure if the ich gets under control/ends b/c I also added a 57 w Aqua UV to the system. Got a fantastic deal.

Because you're using Metro + Focus + UV, you're right - if it works you're not going to know what really did the trick (too many variables!). But hey, if it works - it works and that's what counts! BTW, the UV is a good idea IMO. Not only will it help to kill off free swimming stages, thereby reducing the infectious challenge, it will accelerate the degradation of any Metro and possibly other chemical compounds that get into your water/system.

One chromis looks to be scratching today but the gramma still looks good. Did something stupid but necessary -- added a radiant wrasse. Have had monti nudis wiping out all my montis and this one became available at a great price and was a documented eater of them. And he is already working away. So far he's ok. This was a risk and hopefully won't have disastrous consequences.

He and the others continue to eat the mix of teh frozen food concoction + metro + focus + gel-tek + garlic + selcon.

I feed minimal amounts 3x a day or so.

Cyano and hair algae are going nuts. I wonder if the meds are hacking at the sandbed critters. But I'm putting my $ on that having been caused by the 5-nitromidazoles in the Kick Ich snake oil I was using.

Just so you know, the 5-nitroimidazole that is the active ingredient in Kick-Ich is in the same class of compounds as metronidazole (collectively known as Nitroimidazoles). The tricky part is knowing which form or 5-nitroimidazole is used in Kick-Ich as there are many different derivations (or more correctly isomers). 2-methyl 5-nitroimidazole is actually the precursor used to make metronidazole. I think the salient point here is that you now got so much stuff going into your tank it's difficult to pin point if any one or combination of chemicals is affecting your biological filtration. As I noted previously, you are now in a high risk "zone" for crashing your filter so you need to ramp up your water testing. Also, since you're aggressively feeding your fish in order to get them to eat meds, you could simply be increasing nutrient loading in your system. Either way, you should also consider increasing your water changes as this should help both situations.

I stopped the kick ich, with carbon 24/7 and 2x30% water changes over 5 days before starting with the food. Perhaps that wasn't clear.

But yeah. Thanks!

I never closed up this thread with results. Some of you will see this for a second or third time as you have been posting in other threads so this is primarily for the others who may not be following the others.

I am delighted with the results of my modified Seachem recipe. I used metro, focus, beta glucan, garlic and selcon. For the first batch of food, used for a week, I added Gel-Tek px with the prazi. Then for the rest of the time (total 30 days feeding) I mixed sans Gel-Tek.

The fish gobbled the food with gusto. The display was entirely clear of ich after about 6 days. I did add a 57w uv on there in the middle, so I can't say the food did it alone. But the ich has remained in absentia now for about a month in the display.

The QT at hypo was less successful at first but I continued on. There were spots still after 17 days in hypo. But finally stayed away and the fish did eat the recipe for a full 30 days. The fish have moved to the display now and are fine.

So I will definitely use the recipe again at the first sign of ich on any fish, display or QT or wherever. Inverts consumed the food as well with no unusual dieoffs (I don't consider 1 or 2 lost Turbos or nassarius indication of the food having negative effects. Those guys can go for whatever reasons IME. And if they were casualties of the medication for whatever reason, well, that's a price I'm willing to endure if it saves the fish. I realize others might be queasy about this but other options would have been more stressful for fish and inverts alike.)

Update:

No incidents since last post. Until...

I got from a leaving hobbyist a scibbled rabbit, maybe 5", and a flame hawk, maybe 2". I think the hawk beat the crap out of my Kole and stressed out the Hepatus. Kole had huge gash at back of one side and shredded tail. Tough little bugger, he's had several nasty incidents in my tank, twice gettign stuck in a Tunze 6060 intake, last time left him permanently scarred (4 months ago). Hepatus came up scratching face somehtign awful next day. Ick. Kole had spots. Gramma was doing sympathy scratching.

Mixed Rod's food with the Seachem Focus and Metro, with extra garlic, extra Selcon, melted in a bit of tank water, refrozen. Scratching over in a day, 8 days later no scratching, Kole is fine too. At each feeding the first 7 days I added 10 drops of AP's Gel Tek PX.

Gotta feed the stuff 21days min, but based on past results and use also in QT tank, gotta keep this stuff on hand, the recipe works!

I've had no further problems. I added one fish, in QT it showed spots, fed the recipe for 21 days, fine ever since.

I've lost some fish, but not to ick (or any other observable ailment for that matter).

I swear by my modified recipe. Others have adopted it and report success, though not in threads. I've recommended to CMAS members in threads, then when I see them at meetings they told me that it worked for them.

Trying to figure out your recipe from this thread, would it be possible for you to list the ingredients. Also, did you use this on in your reef tank?

Thanks,
Steven

You guys are working too hard. I discovered Blue Lagoon Fish Food's medicated line through a reccomendation and have had great success with treating ich and such. I have clowns and have on occasion, needed to treat them with the antibacterial and antiparasite foods. I treated them immediately and whooooo! Great stuff, corals stayed NICE. I got the Blue Lagoon fish food at www. premiumaquatics.com

It's right up there on this page of this thread but here you go again:

The Focus and Metronidazole are added according to Seachem's instructions. I soaked in extra garlic (Rod's Food has garlic already) and Selcon (ditto).

Lisa:
Highly doubtful they will tell us all the ingredients. Besides, I see no point to doing it.

Rod's food is far superior to anything OSI puts out.

He lists all his ingredients.

And I can control the meds I add when I mix, choosing what to include and what not.

You say we are making it too hard. Those in this hobby who try to make things easy usually end up quite unhappy! The easy route often fails, and on this subject almost always does.

Your comment; those of "us" in this hobby sounds like you have a club that you don't want anyone to join! You've already admitted that you're highly doubtful, and you see no point, so it sounds like you don't have much of an open mind.

I just wanted to pass on something fabulous. 21 days sounds like it took you a long time. I didn't lose ANY fish, and we all know that immediate treatment is key with ich. I used the products, it worked, my tank is fabulous!
