Pre filter sponge

Is it ok to run my dt with out a pre filter sponge in my overflow? I'm cleaning it constantly.

yes. i use stiff fiber mesh and roll it twice. it's enough to keep the snails & hermits out of the filter sock, but not the pods & mini brittle stars. much easier to clean & doesn't clog. also, try to cover from any light source - algae & slime buildup clogs it much faster.

Thanks Doug. The tank is in the basement and there is not much light where the over flow is. Where can I buy a small piece of the fiber mesh? I would hat to buy a roll of it. Can I use the fiber mesh tape that is used for covering cracks on dry rock?

Go to Michael's and look in the sewing dept for plastic needlepoint mesh. It comes in different colors and sizes. Works very well, and an 11x14 sheet is less than $2. I use the 7-square, which is the biggest, and I think it's perfect

i actually inherited from a friend who had a broken CPR overflow.
