pregnant solar wrasse

I purchased a solar fairy three weeks ago. Just this week her belly has become very large. She seems to have no signs of stress and is eating well. Today she has been a little more aggressive with the others, as far as defending her tettitory. I am getting the feeling that she is expecting. Does any one have any suggestions, or know much about this?

First, are you sure your solar wrasse is a female? 2nd, being "fat" and "more aggressive" doesn't suggest "pregnancy", it simply suggests a fish that has settled in well and is getting well fed. Third, without a male around I'd pretty much have to speculate that there definitely won't be any fertile eggs, and probably not eggs at all. FWIW, it is my understanding that wrasses are generally broadcast spawners, simply scattering eggs and sperm and that's that.

Of course, increased aggression could also be a sign that your wrasse is turning from "female" into a dominant male (in the absence of a dominant male).

Sorry to squelch your hopes, but for most fish it takes at least 2 for them to breed. I can't think of very many live-bearing marines (that actually could be "pregnant" at purchase) other than an Adult Shark or perhaps a brotula, or a mouthbrooding fish that's holding a brood of eggs at the time of purchase (although that really isn't "pregnancy" I suppose).

FWIW,

Matt

Do you know of anythings else that could cause it's belly to be that enlarged? If I can get it to hold still I will try to post a picture of it. I have a flasher in the same tanks that is his buddy who hasn't displayed this either.

Typically in my experience distended abdomens are signs of a few possible things:

1. Egg Binding (just lost a female cardinafish to that tonight).
2. Abdominal/Intestinal Infections (fluid or gas buildup)
3. A pending spawn
4. A healthy fat fish that's perhaps had a recent meal.

I'm still going with the simple version based on the info you provided...it just sounds like a happy healthy well fed fish that's settled in and starting to make it's presence known.

FWIW,

Matt
