prego naso tang???

my brother purchased a naso tang recently from our lfs who kept it in with another naso. we don't know much about them in terms of how they breed at all. since she has been in his tank her stomach has gotten a pretty good size bulge and kinda keeps to herself under a cave of live rock. my question is, is it possible for her to be pregnant and if so, what signs should we look for to tell for sure? also do they lay eggs or give live birth?

Pretty sure they are like most fish on the reef and they just release eggs into the water. The male would then just fertilize them in the water as well. Then the eggs just go with the current. Even if you did get a pair to spawn in your tank, don't bet on any babies swimming around. A tang has never been captive breed even by the diehard hobbyist and scientist.

To the OP: most tangs are group spawners and just release their eggs & sperm into the plankton soup. I don't remember any successful spawning of any tang in captivity. I hope you have plenty of room for the Naso, they get huge.

ok, yes I have a qt tank set up that he can use. the naso is eating like a horse. should we move him into qt and treat with prazi pro? the prazi is the only medication I have other than copper. the only concern I have is the qt tank is set up for my 55gallon tank so its only 15gallons. his tank is MUCH larger than mine and the naso is about 3 inches. will this be a big enough qt for the tang?

I don't know what you could use to treat that? I have had it where it worked its way out on its own. I don't know what medication you could use. Prazipro is for flukes, so that will not help. Unless someone suggests a medicine that may help. I wouldn't move it to QT, that will only stress it further.

ok, someone further up asked if I could move it to qt so that is the only reason I mentioned it but you think it would be better off in the DT to work itself out? should he be feeding more seaweed ? that would help if it were a blockage right? he give his tangs a strip of seaweed every three days right now but maybe he should do every day to try and see if it is a blockage??

Yes, unless someone has a fix that can take place in QT, I wouldn't move him. I don't have a suggestion for a medication that will help. So, I would leave him alone and hopefully it will work its way out on its own. Just feed it normally would be my advice.
