Premum Salt Mixes not so Expensive?

Quick question,

IO regular is $55 for 48lbs bucket of salt, at BRS.

IO Reef Crystals is $63 for 44.8lbs of salt

Red Sea Coral Pro, supposedly an expensive premium brand, is $73 for 48.5lbs of salt

It would seem to me that in this case, RSCP is only a little bit more (about $5 for the bucket) expensive, pound for pound, than IORC.

Am I missing something?

I ask because my cloests (and decent) LFS sells RSCP, and IORC's availability at my local Petcos is spotty. I don't have a lot of space in my house to store stuff, so being able to go to Petco 7 days a week at practically any hour would be nice if I suddenly need salt or other supplies (rather than wait for the weekend at the LFS, since their hours are inconvenient weekdays). But if availability is unreliable, I don't see any reason to not go with the LFS.

You're overpaying for IO regular at those prices. You can find the 200 gallon boxes of IO for $40.00 online.

I personally have switched to plain old RC. But with the caveat that I dose my WC to match my tank. The small amount of calcium and muriatic acid I add is moot if compared to the price.

Yes, as noted IO can be had for $40 delivered from that destroyer of all things sacred named after a large river :lol: I never bought into the 'premium' salt mix thing. Use IO and then dose if you have to.

Thanks for the input so far. I wanted to keep it all with BRS to keep the comparisons apples and apples, and because I thought there prices would be good. But I guess not...

IO 200 gallon box is $39.00 on Amazon and Dr Foster and Smith with free shipping currently. Pretty good deal! Coralife is also only $40 on DFS, I've heard good things about it.

Once you realize salt is salt, you'll stop buying into the "premium" salt mixes and their prices. If your dosing already, a small WC with these "premium" salts is more then likely going to throw your dosing off.

I agree with ca1ore as well. I started my new build with RC but as soon as I start dosing, I'll be using IO.

Oh, and its mississippi.com. It's wiped out small business all over the delta.
