Prestone driveway heat!!!

Yeah, it works just fine. You should probably read about using epsom salts/mag chloride as well to prevent a build up of the other chemical in the Driveway heat though (dont remember the name)

Sodium Chloride 1-2%
Potassium Chloride 2-3%
Strontium Chloride 0-1%

Which other chemical are you talking about Torqued?

It's actually the sulphate in the epsom that can build up but really only if you don't do regular water changes and it still is about a year in time. The mgcl in the mag mixture is the formula change from straight epsom salts that corrects that.

Accourding to Randy's recipe, you really only add the Mag (epsom salt) mixture a couple of times a year anyway. I do 30 gallon water changes every 2 weeks. I hope that is suficient.

For every gallon or so you use 1 cup of the epsom salt mixture. In my tank it doesn't take that long to use up a gallon of the mg mix. Most of my ca/alk comes from limewater and I just use the homemade 2 part for what the lime can't keep up. I guess I go through about a gallon of the mag mix a month. I add almost 2 cups to my weekly salt water change that I do in a 32 gallon brute using IO. I get about 4 gallons lime water @ day for evap which takes care of a couple dKh per day of use and only occationally have to bump it with the homemade mix. One point last summer I was up to 2 cups a day of the homemade mix + the 4 gallons limewater but currently am just on limewater with a weekly cup or two of each of the parts. Shows how regular monitoring is needed. Had I set my values and just kept adding the 2 cups a day since then I could have some crazy numbers going.

The Prestone Driveway heat is likely fine, and as mentioned above, use 20% less by volume.

I have an improved recipe coming out in February that uses both magnesium chloride and Epsom salts, and that is discussed in this thread:

I discuss the effect of water changes on sulfate in this article:

DrBDC,

Thanks for the helpfull info.

Randy,

As always, thanks! I will begin using the 2 part additive (utilizing te Prestone) Saturday. I am out of Kent Liquid Calcium and do not want to spend another $9.00 for a small bottle....:)

Where would one find magneisum chloride hexahydrate?

Where would one find magneisum chloride hexahydrate?

That's much harder. From the article:

Magnesium chloride hexahydrate made by the Dead Sea Works is sold at many home stores, including Home Depot. It is often labeled MAG Flake. It may be repackaged as meltsnow:
http://www.meltsnow.com/msds-mag-flakes.htm

It may also be available from these stores:

and

Substitutes for Dead Sea Works Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate

The Dead Sea Works is a business unit of ICL Fertilizers. They sell magnesium chloride hexahydrate in the US as a deicer and also apparently to artificial seawater (salt) manufacturers. In the past, potential impurities (such as ammonia) have left many aquarists and even some companies wary of using deicing or any other grades of magnesium chloride hexahydrate. However, The Dead Sea Works company recently supplied a detailed impurity profile for its product listing most impurities (29 of them in all). None were high enough to be a concern to reef aquarists. Included was an indication that it had adequately low ammonia. Subsequent analysis by Greg Hiller of some of the supplied material confirmed that the ammonia is low enough to use.

The recipe above is based on the bulk density of the MAG Flake as supplied by the manufacturer. They also sell a pellet product. It may be OK to use, but probably has a slightly different bulk density (they do not provide it that I can find). Exact values for the magnesium part are less important than the other parts, and when using pellets Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢d just follow the directions as stated here for flake unless better information is supplied in the future.

At this time, magnesium chloride hexahydrate from the Dead Sea Works is the only such product that I recommend, but there may be others that are acceptable. Choosing other unknown brands may be fine, or not. Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ve not tested them for purity.

Just a FYI Harveysalt sells it. It's from the Deadsea.

It is 15 dollars a bag for 50 lbs.
5 dollar box fee
plus ups shipping.

He can give you guys a deal for a pallet of 48 bags :). Anyone want 2400 pounds of this stuff? lol.

It also dubs as a great bath additive and makes your skin soft he told me :) Get those wrinkles all soft!

Tava,
Have you tried the Prestone Driveway heat in the 2 part yet? How did it work? How much did you add? How is it working for you? I have a bag in my basement I bought this year and have been skeptical about trying it? Let me know your experiences with it.

I've used the Prestone Driveway Heat for over a year now and it works great! Instead of the 1 1/4 cup on the formula 2 I use 1 cup. Each of those are doubled if you go with the formula 1.

Cool. I think I will go get some tonight. I can only assume tht the best plan is to buy a 50lb bag before summer so you have enough to last all summer.

It's usually around 20 to 25 dollars for shipping. It's great if you split the 50 lb with someone as that is ALOT of magnesium.
