Preventing Parasites when introducing clams

My question is how do you prevent parasites when introducing clams. I just treated for red bugs for the 2nd time in a year. So I am a little paranoid. I would assume AEFW and Red Bugs can hitchhike on a clam. How would you treat a clam if those parasites are taking a ride on them? I am unable to to a QT for space and lack of lighting for it. Just looking for opinions. What a fresh water dip kill them? And if so what is the proper procedure for than?

finverts are the only things I do not QT. I know it is a risk, but I think its a low risk. but, it is always something that I contemplate every time I introduce them to my tank

there really is no reason for red bugs or AEFW to be hanging out on clam shells for extended amounts of time.

I am unable to to a QT for space and lack of lighting for it.

A 5 gallon tank with a powerhead, heater and a NO T12 bulb would be sufficient for a QT. I've heard mixed things about dips and clams.

You should probably also go visit the clam forum and pose your question there.

For clams I usually run a smaller filter sock to catch potential pyramid snails, which attack the clam. I have never given a clam a preventative treatment for another species problems. If you're concerned, QT your clams, but do it properly with good lighting and quality water. Avoid FW dipping it 'just because'.

I'm not discounting your fears, but I am cautioning you against going overboard and undertaking risky treatments with no definitive benefit to your system.

So you are not using a QT for your corals and have had red bugs twice in a year. Shocking!

Every time you add something to your tank without a QT you are taking a risk. It is really gonna be up to you if the risk is worth it.

More likely to come in your new clam are Pyramid snails and/or their eggs.
Do you have other clams in your tank already that you are willing risk?

There really aren't any magic dipping potions out there for anything else that is a guarantee. Sorry but I don't think clams are really any different.

I agree that your chances of red bugs on a clam are pretty slim or a least not nearly as likely.
