Preventing Red Bugs with a new Frag

I'm adding a new acan frag to the tank and the guy I got it from said he noticed red bugs on his acros. I have acros in my tank and want to prevent bringing any over on this acan. I know they're different creatures, but I don't want to risk it.
He mentioned a few dip treatments, but I forgot what was suggested. Is this something that can be fixed with a fresh water dip or are chemicals needed?

Right now its sitting in my Lionfish tank, so it's safe and away from any corals.

What should I do to wash off any of the little bastards that may be there before putting it in my reef tank?

BTW, I left out the coral source because I didn't want to throw out names. He volunteered the info to me, so I'm sure he'd do the same for anyone. I'm just not going to call anyone out that's been perfectly honest with me.

i got a chemical dip from over on 10th st and worked great...first time i used it it found stuff..

Cody, most times red bugs will primarly stay on the acros and I would not think they would be on your acans. But interceptor is the treatment for red bugs and I have heard people using it to dip. I use Tropic Marin to dip.

I know, but I didn't want to risk the odd hitchhiker or 3 being brought into my tank since I have a couple of nice acros that are doing very well. Murphy likes to bite me in the *** every chance he gets, so I prefer to keep him at bay :)

I have some lugals iodine, would that do the trick or is it only for bacterial problems

Can Revive be grabbed (or any of the others) at any of the big box stores? I was just out at his place yesterday and would like to avoid a 30min drive if possible.

I don't think the box stores will have any dips. I also use revive with pretty good success. You might check @ Aquariums up there in Edmond if its closer to you.

personally.........QT it for 7 days.

No bugs left, even if they were there to begin with.

I dipped it in a Lugol's mix and put it in the tank. I found a few online postings saying that Lugol's would kill them if they were there. I only saw a few pods come running off and it's in the tank and looking great.

I will set up a QT tank in the future though. I've been getting lucky so far, but know I shouldn't push it.

Paul,

Is that due to the life cycle of red bugs without their native host?

yep, thats exactly what it is. Of course, there has to be no other acropora in the QT tank for this approach to work.

I used my 20L with nothing in it but a couple of anemones, a dwarf lion and a tan zoanthid colony. It wasn't a week, but I'll cross my toes

thanks for the replies guys. Hopefully someone else will benefit from this too.

The new acan looks great in my tank :)
