Pricing for chalices?

coral acquisition

How do you price chalices? I'm thinking of selling my Tyree Red Watermelon
Chalice and have seen them go up to $99 per eye or more.

Mine's about 1+" with 8-9 eyes and is finally coloring up.

depends on several factors,

the original going price per eye(hyped to the 9's and photoperfect)

the lowest price someone is selling for per eye on the boards or similar pieces sold

health and color

How available it is

how unavailable it is

The size of the frag or colony

Most important what is someone willing to pay?

Tyree Red is a nice piece, but it is not that rare, and many already have it.

A 1" colony is on the smaller side of what I call a colony, without a picture it is hard to advise on price but $150 to $300 in the So Cal Market depending on color and health maybe add $100 to $150 if you are willing to ship and list on the national board.

Chalice prices have been getting much softer as of late as I think people are not as willing to pay into the hype unless they can regain some money back quick or it is a top notch amazing piece.

Good luck with the sale, but I think the times of getting $99 per eye for Tyree Red are gone. I have found that trades are where it is at and I have gained many nice pieces off of growth as I rarely sell coral.

Wow, just googled that and they look awesome. But for now, if I do decide, I would rather sell than trade. Since I rather have the $$ to fund my next project. :)

How much to you sell them for anyways?

I haven't sold a frag yet. Not sure what I would ask. My mother colony is pretty big so I could cut a big piece.

I think the hardest part is finding a buyer. Like Scott said most people have it, or had it and sold it, which means they don't want it anymore.

It's a really nice coral, it's not like it got ugly over the years.

Great advice so far, the only thing I would add is that if you want to sell it your likely better off cutting it in half and letting the halves heal and then selling them. It will grow faster as a colony, but your more likely to find buyers for it at 1/2 the price of the colony. You may even consider going 1/4s depending on the going rate of the frag.

For example say you have a 12 eye Miami hurricane priced at ~ $100. Cut it into 4x3 eye frags for $35 each = $140. You'll find more people willing to pay $35 for a nice common frag than one person to buy a $100 mini colony.

Just my observation on corals... I just grow mine till they try and kill each other, it's more fun ;)

Cut it in forths then have four people say they will be there at 2 pm on Saturday, and never show and then pm you three days later with an excuse. No thanks, that is why I keep my coral or trade. In my busy life my time is worth more than the extra $40 you may make.

One thing you need is a good picture that represents the coral well and it woill sell if it is looking good. Cutting coral can be risky I have lost some nice pieces that did not survive the cut.

Good luck

If you do cut it make sure to take pics of the colony before, it can take a few weeks for the frags to regain their colors.
