Can anyone help me?

I can get it flowing (off) by sucking on the outlet into a bowl on the floor then I put my finger over it and move it up to the tank and turn it on and nothing.

I'm getting really ticked off.

I wish I'd gotten something else. I know canisters aren't recommended but I like it with carbon.

It also came with bio-media - should I use that or not?

Do not connect the inlet tubing to the canister suck on the tubbing start the siphon connect to the canister be sure to remove the all the air out of the canister, then turn on the pump. PS I have a 2013 from the 80's.

PITA - I know -- get yourself a set of valves for the intake tubing.
This way you can do whatever to the canister, re-connect the hose turn the valve & water starts flowing.

I have been using Eheim canister filters in my fw systems since the 80s, too. One of the secrets to Eheim happiness is to invest in the double tap connectors for both inlet and return lines. This makes priming and cleaning a breeze. Install these, start siphon into a bowl or bucket, then shut off when flow is good and connect to filter. Let canister fill, shakeout bubbles, then close return valve and connect return line.

I have used ehfisubstrat and pro for years, but am slowly switching over to Siporax for its ability to host anaerobic bacteria without clogging. I have been fighting a persistent algae problem (>10 years) in my discus tank that is abating since I put Siporax in one of the eheim canisters in that tank about 5 months ago...

If you have the quick connect fittings you just get water in them then open the valve and the canister will automatically prime. Once enough water is inside you can turn the pump on and let it get any remaining air out.

An Eheim Classic on a reef though?

I find the easiest way to prime the eheim classic is to ensure there is no water in the lines or canister, put the intake under the water and suck on the outlet. Keep the outlet above the waterline until the resulting syphon has filled the canister and outlet pipe to the waterline. Replace the outlet and switch the filter on. You may need to give the canister a gentle shake to dislodge any remaining bubbles but this has worked for me without fail every time.

If you're having so much trouble then just open the canister and fill it with water... No sense in taking days to do it. Once you have it running the quick connects will ensure you never have trouble printing again.

I'm such an idiot. I realized I had my hoses backwards. Working fine now that I hooked them up right. What a moron!
