Very cool! Prices keep coming down on the home/desktop models, if they get a bit cheaper I might grab one. Just can't justify buying one now for the little use it would get.

Kidding aside, never really played with a 3d printer before. Seen them at micorcentre when i go there sometimes. How much cost in material do you think that thing runs? Refills expensive?

This is exactly what I was thinking. Maybe it's too expensive to start this business on your own, but Red Sea might buy the patent from you. But while you're at it, design one for all of the other test kits out there, patent them too and then corner the market.

The sharks would ask why anyone with a 3D printer can't just do the same thing.

Makerbot refills are around $40 a roll. You could probably get a couple sets of racks from one roll. The plastic is fairly cheap. The $3,000.00 for the unit is where the price comes in. Then you have the software for 3D models. I use solidworks at work so I have that covered. The 3D modeling software is $3,000-$12,000. There is cheap and freeware for 3D modeling is out there but it sucks incredibly.

Here comes the problem. 3D printing is great for one off prototyping and really unique artistic shapes. (1 rack every 12 hours) Something like this rack could be produced at a much faster rate by machining for mid level quanities. (1 rack every 12 mins) High production would go to injection molding machines which output would 12/min on up) Just as a comparison.

No, seriously, it looks like a well thought out idea. I particularly like the rack on the right with spots for lids, syringes, drying, etc.

I did something similar with my test kits.

I like the case. I need something for organization and drying. I have a water test/making area that I keep everything at. But the case is nice for storage.

This would cost a bunch of money to make the injection mold for the piece.
I would think Red Sea would be the one to do it. As an individual would not have the funds to have the mold made.

You know, a CNC machine could knock one of those out in about 5 mins if it's made of plastic, find a local Machine shop and see what it would cost to make, the first one would probably cost about $150 (shop time and material) but after that they can make you hundreds for very cheap say around price of material + $10 (if your making 25+)
