Problem with a local store

Hello all and hope your aquariums are doing well!!

I had a really bad time with a local saltwater store
near or around Cary IL. I do not want to state the name of this place but just to give you an idea of what I want through...

1) Rude
2) Lack of knowledge on some basic corals.
3) Salt water to go was bad!! Bad Mix
4) Shipping never on time with stock!
5) edited profanity customer service. Example when I called to check a price for a leather Fiji was told a frag of 2" was at $10.
Than when I got there they said it was $30. I said $20 and they said "nope" (*&#*(%)
6) Did not offer me help with my questions nor to my buds until off the phone. Only to find out there was another person there that was working but on cell phone.

Sorry to hear about your bad exprience. But just my very humble opinion......


Share the same conversation with the owner/management and see if they're responsive? And if they're not.....

Then us know who they are so we can be cautious dealing with them.

The owner was there and after speaking with him he just told me "well some of my guys just know more about sps rather the other areas of corals and some are just new." The salt water mix happens and can not be controlled. We are in an area where the water is not really the best." My question on that was "you have an RO right?"
response was yea, "is there anything else that I can help you with?" Do you want me to buy water from a store too?"

After that I just told him the store will not last long with this rude remarks and the lack of knowledge over "his guys"

This all was on 2 visits. I will not go back. There are much more better places around. Such as petco!!!

In Buffalo Grove there is SeaShor and ExoticAquatics (spelling) in Lake in The Hills.

Wow...I am shocked to hear of such a bad experience.

Rather than the stealth tactics, why don't you tell us what store this is? You'll find plenty of good and bad reviews of LFS in this forum, I don't see why you feel the need to hide the name.

Your right I would not want anyone else to have the same type of problem that I had. This place is called OceansFloor.
The out look on the store is ok however the over all experience was enough for me to post a thread on them.

WOW!! Now I'm shocked beyond words. I think you will find nothing but glowing reviews in here of Ocean's Floor. I met the owner, Dave, at IMAC and found him to be one of the most knowledgable store owner's I've ever met...right up there with Rod Buehler.

I'll let the rest chime in now that we know the store but....are you sure you were at OF?

Yep....
I'm 100% sure about that. I have been to Exotic Aquatics, SeaShor, Show Tank, and I have had 100% best care from them. They talk with you and the sales part of coarse but next time you come in the do recall what setup you have and how things are going. I buddy was with me first time for him to go into the OceansFloor. Dave was not in but these 2 others where just not wanting to help. The one guy that just told us I can not help you I only know SPS. As for the other guy had to clue was a Sally Light foot was. However the water problem was the last draw....
HOW THE HECK CAN YOU SELL WATER AND NOT TEST IT FIRST!!

Keep in mind this was not on just 1 time there. There was no 3 times the charm for this place. I'm new to the Cary area so I really was looking foreward to OceansFloor.


I about lost my Acran Lord and Blasto after the water change. Had to run up to Exotic Aquatics and do a 20% Things are doing really well now. I'll post some pics up soon!!

I'm truly surprised as well that you are speaking of Ocean's Floor. I have had nothing but great service when I have visited the store.

I have to say I find this puzzling from top to bottom. Not the least of which is the oddity of a new member posting such a strong attack on not just a well-established store, but one of the 3-4 very best stores in the local area, by virtually every account over the last 2 years.

Ok, so rather than pick apart each of your points, let me just ask this: if you have only been to the store twice, and one of those occasions by your own admission did not speak in depth to anyone, how exactly do you determine "shipping never on time with stock!" If you are local, why are you getting things shipped? You mention no such experiences. If you are referring to the store's deliveries from wholesalers, on what do you base this attack? You by your own admission visited twice, and at least once the owner was not there.

This thread smells fishy, pardon the pun.

I was told that they would get something in stock and when I called to see it the coral was in I got the answer of " Did not get the coral in forgot to put on the list This happen twice. Which that was not from Dave but from another person who works there. My point is Dave told me if you see don't see something that we do not have we can get it. Besides this person was the same one who could not help my bud and I since they stated " I only know SPS" Come on now you mean to tell me this was the right thing to say??? and not get anyone else to help here???

Base this attack??? Sorry but if you had a good time at Oceans Floor than keep going there pal glad to hear it.

This was just a post which I felt everyone should know the problem I had. This is only helping and with you in bold try to boot my post as if I'm making it up.

I stated 3 times in a row that I had problems with this place. If you really want to know I have been there about 7 - 8 times. Out of the 7 I just looked around 2 of the days and to just see what the store was like. Dave was the only one there.

However not to test premix saltwater before you sell is something that should never be done. Than to call up OF and get the response of "the water is not really the best in this area" I"m sorry but I do not need my setup to crash. Would you agree?

Only thing fishy is you trying to state that I'm talking a lie. Why would I do that??? I'm new to the area and had a very bad time at Oceans Floor.

This is the reason I do not like to post on chat sites. Only to help others know about a bad time I had at a store in the area.

MrJeffrey, As you've noticed, we Chicago reefers can be pretty bold when someone new slams a place that most of us put near the top of our list. Sorry you had a bad experience there, but I'm most surprised with the comments about the owners response! That's just not his nature, so we wonder...

Yes, there are many good choices of LFS in the close NW burbs, so you can choose which ones suit your style and livestock choices.....

BTW, a very smart local reefer suggested that I test the water that comes from each LFS I visit, so I can 'learn' how to best maintain my system. Contrary to your experience, OF sells SW that is right on the mark, just like others in our area.

Hope your future experiences with our LFS are all good!

With regard to the comment about deliveries being on time I have one point to make about this hobby. Patience is key.

Shop owners are at the mercy of collectors and propagators. ou can request something but that doesn't miraculously create a supply for your demand. Your tank won't crash because you lack a particular coral specimen.

LMAO I don't trust anyone who puts exoctic aquatics above oceans floor. Dave, Justin and the crew are the best. I've been to all the places he listed and like ocean floor best. He can keep exoctic aquatics and let us have Oceans floor. lol

Ok I have been chat'n with Dave back and forth and we in a way did fine the problem. That person does not work there anymore. Sice almost a week. This was the person that gave the water out and when I called to speak with a GM they said there name was Dave and how can he help me....

I will be talk with Dave (the owner) in the store soon!!

I can tell you all one thing that I will not stat any problems that I have with another store. See I was not going to even state the name here but I did. So I learned from this one.


Ah and um FISHMAN350 talk is cheap but grow up buddy!!!
