Problems with my Squamosa clam.

Ok i was able to obtain a nice green-blue squamy!!! but When it extends it mantle, there are some areas that dont extend all the way. My derasa clam is doing amazing. BUt this guy isnt. He is reacting to light, he closes all the way, the only thing off with my chemicles is my salinity, its 1.027 which i am slowly bringing back down to 1.025. Would that affect the clam though. also from the way it looks it almost looks like the parts of the mantle were either nipped off, or just pulled really far back against the clam.

I don't think that .027 would be that much of a problem for the clam.was it like this when you got it?how long did it take for the clam to start doing this?can you post some pics,a bunch if you can

I got it at night so i did the acclimation and went to bed, i checked it out in the morning and everything was good except for the mantle.

check for any irritations along the edge of the shell where it meets the mantle like algae etc....hopefully it something easy like that

Watch it for anything nipping. I just pulled a hermit that liked to crawl on my squammy. Also look for the dreaded snails. If it has only been in your tank for a day, still may be getting used to your parameters. Where do you have it placed in your tank? Mine is on the bottom and doing great. Not big on being on the rocks. I would think your PC's would be sorta ok, but VHO or MH would be ideal.
Just my 2 pennies.

well it hasnt gotten worse but it hasnt gotten better.
here are some pics. Do you think that i should do a FW dip tonight?

please help!!!

Well i am uterly confused. The clams is doing better. a few of te flaps that were "pinched?" are now extended, but there are a few little areas that are still "pinched?"

Did you do the dip? If it were me I would'nt. The FW IMO would only add to the stress. But then maybe you did it and it worked.

Is it attaching to the bottom?

SteveU

No i did not do the dip. I did do a bowl feeding. yes even over night it attached to the bottom. i had it attach to a shell, then over night it turned itself 180 deggrees and jumped out of the shell to the sand. (the shel was sitting on the sand)

Well, It turned around 180 degrees last night, but everything else is the same, i dont think i am going to do the dip, untill there is nothing else i can do.

Hey, What is your water motion like? I had my new Squamosa in with my big clams, this tank is more like a refugimn. I moved him to my main display and the rough edges like your pics smothed out. Send me your e-mail I'll send you some pics. Hope this helps. P.S. not to step on toes, the only time that I have dipped a clam is when it is infested with pyramid snails. I remove all visable snails, then with a tooth brush and running fresh water i scrub the clam. I keep the water temp about the smae as my tanks. I also try not to allow the water to touch the bclams mantle. I have had great resolts from this. Good luck let me know wath happens, Paul

Water movement, isnt much. Not sure how many gph, but the mantle on my deasa and squamosa (the mantle thats extended) dont move.

Well I am at the point of last resort with the clam, it has gotten worse, can someone please fully explain to me about how to do the FW dip, What the set-up/procedure is?

i use a 5g bucket, and match temp and PH as best as you can.then place the clam in there for frrom 20 to 30 min.while its in there take a clean turkey baster and bast the clam all along where the shell and mantle meet.i was talking to Barry N. to day and he has said that he has had good luck doing it this way and that you can do this about every other day up to 3 times a week.

Shrimp X what I wasb saying is that when my squamosa was doing what your is now it was in very little current. Now it is in my main display which is of much greater water motion. All the water about 4000 gph is alternating thru one wave making device or another. Paul. Do you or did you have any snails on your clam?

David,
What were you results of the dip?
I'm getting ready to do my Derasa in a FWD this AM. I think it might be too late, though. Looking poorly. I'm going to try a bowl feeding as well.
