problems with reef crystals salt mix

please be aware that reef crystals is having a low calcium level. before adding RC to your tank check your calcium levels. this could explain die off in SPS and LPS. also in the past month I have been having ph issues. I just thought I would share the info. dr fosters and smith are looking into this issue. this is the first time I have ever had problems with RC. and would strongly suggest if you have RC to test it. oh by the Instant ocean is having the same problem too.

Good to know. It's quite a shame too. RC/IO, while cheap has always been a "bulletproof" salt as far as I'm concerned. I've tried oceanic, Tropic Marin pro, and Red Sea and I've never been as happy as I have been while using IO/RC.

Bummer. I wonder if we can get lot numbers or anything like that.

not sure. I am just gonna deal with it a suppliment calcium. I like my RC/IO. and test my water till they get it all worked out.

My last bucket from Central Pet tested low. My current one tests ok. I don't have the old bucket anymore, so I can't give a lot number.

Synthetic Sea Salt

Synthetic Sea Salt

Instant Ocean over the past 20+ years has had one of the best, consistent synthetic sea salts there is, in my opinion.
It's unusual to hear they had a possible bad batch, but, I wouldn't panic, as they will get it corrected.
I personally always premix my seawater in safe poly. containers for a minimum of 24+ hours prior to waterchanges.
During that time, I set the fresh seawater to near EXACT numbers of the system I am doing a water change on. By this, I mean specific gravity, temp, ph, calcium, magnesium, etc..
I would personally advise always testing, and modifying your new seawater to match your display tank numbers for better consistent conditions (other than say nitrate, or phosphate if it is measurable, of course).
I also double check my test kit reagents if I notice an inconsistent new batch of seawater. Sometimes it is simply expired reagents, or a contaminated test vial, rather than the salt manufacturer.
Keep in mind that the manufacturers of synthetic sea salts are using ion selective membrane testing equipment to monitor their batches, which aren't perfect, but far superior to our drop count titration test kits.
You will also get different test numbers on your fresh mixed seawater based on temperature and specific gravity levels you adjust it to as well. So sometimes it may be the aquarists mixing techniques vs. the synthetic sea salt manufacturers mixing recommendation that "throw" numbers off.
Keep us posted on what you find out Ryan!

Drs. fostersmith is aware of the situation
And? What are they gonna do? Are they gonna list the lot #'s of the bad batches and replace them? Just curious as to what they have planned.....

I originally used IO and never had an issue with it. For some reason, think it was a sale and good advice, I switched to oceanic. Have been just as happy. That stinks they have had a bad batch but being so good for so long, they will make things right :)

On tropic marin pro, my only experience has been... 90% of the UBER amazing looking SPS aquariums I have seen in the last year or so all used it *LOL* That tells me a lot
