How do we know that this isn't just another snake oil (French Snake oil that is)?
The below post is my opinion of the Prodibio products that I have experience with and what I have gathered from other RC members that have had experiences so far with this product line and any related husbandry habits in order to maintain a low nutrient system for SPS corals. I still consider myself as a newb after being in the hobby since 1992 as there is always something new to learn from the person sitting next to you! SO please don't shred me apart for giving my opinion!
I would be skeptic of this as well and suggest for anyone considering to try out new/unknown additives in their system to do their due diligence before so. Like I stated earlier I followed the thread for a long time and PM'ed one of the contributors (TryTheChi) in the thread many times with questions. I also did some research on Zeovit as a comparison to Prodibio. I recall the Mark Weiss products, but have never tried them.
Several RC members that have been following the thread wanted to give Prodibio a try and have now been using it for a decent amount of time. There are some before and after pictures at various durations since they started dosing as well as comments and recommendations. Their pictures have demonstrated good results and their comments so far have been anything but negative.
Prodibio is based on biotechnology. I believe that good bacteria is beneficial for marine systems and immensely assists in the nutrient export process. Using a system to consistently manage selective "good" bacteria helps to create a low nutrient environment, an environment most SPS thrive in. A portion of the product line also provides nutrients and trace elements for the corals. The coral food and trace elements play an important role for corals in a low nutrient environment to ensure they are not being stripped of their necessities.
One item of concern that was voiced on RC is that some sponges began to decline while other sponges did not have a reaction. This also included a decline in macro algae and nuisance algae. I have a few sponges (red, yellow, orange, green, purple) and noticed the red sponge began to turn brown by the 4th day after the initial dose. I have also been assured that my macro algae will decline and that I will need remove it from my sump/refug eventually. There is a before and after picture on RC that includes the elimination of nuisance algae around the SPS while further into the dosing regimen. These are all positive effects and indicators demonstrating the low nutrient environment that the bacteria is establishing. Soft and LPS corals have not had any adverse reactions that I have noticed and it has been reported that none should be expected. Soft and LPS should benefit from the supplements. As for the sponges, perhaps these users were not dosing live phytoplankton, which I believe plays an important role in this type of system. As for my red sponge showing signs as a result, I have not been keeping up with my phyto cultures recently, but plan to start another batch soon!
FWIW although I have only started with the product, I have been following Iwan's thread, other threads, and non-RC forums, and have come to the conclusion that Prodibio is a product line worth looking into if you have "SPS fever" or are trying to accomplish a low nutrient system to better manage problems in your tank as a result of excess nutrients. Keep in mind from what I have read/learned, Prodibio can be used alone, but it has been recommended by Iwan and other RC members to use this in combination with other products. I will post this information.
