Prodibio

I am on month three now or close to it. My corals have definity gotten more colorful. My blue corals look fantastic as do the reds. Very little if any brown left on my corals. My green corals, mostly stags are a little too light for me so I am going to start increasing my feeding.

I am wrapping up one month worth of dosing. I am getting some strong growth and coloration in all of my corals. Not to sure if this is a normal increase or if its the Prodibio. My nusiance algae seems to be subsiding. All of the water parameters are in check and I haven't made a single water change since I started dosing. Next I will add the DSB to the fuge.

I ordered a month ago now and still have not received the product. I emailed Rob last week and he stated that a new shipment was due in at any time, but still no updates or product.

The new tank is now on day three and it would be nice to start dosing.

Kamil, Let me know if/when yours arrives. I would be curious to know if I got skipped somehow. Or maybe the product I ordered was OOS. What did you order? I ordered Startup and BioClean

I read the Prodibio forum on Rob's site. He is waiting for the stuff to arrive.

My tank has been on the products for 6 weeks. I see improvements in SPS but my echinos and zoos are not liking it. Brains, candycanes and scolymias are good. Plates are ???.

Still some cyano but it seems to be in lowest flow areas.

I have no coralline growth but I think this may be the vodka so I stopped dosing it.

I am doseing my third tretment on my 2 tanks the 92 corner gets 1 Biodigest and 2 Bioptim biweekly and the 29 gets 1 each biweekly. 29's water pretty clear looks good but not sure if the zoos like or dislike it. the 92 looking better hair algea going away slowly but I am also dosing 14mil of vodka daily good polyp extension an dgrowth looks to be picking up

I ordered on 4/17 and credit charged on 4/19 and still havent recd. I do not like to be charged for something a month ago and still not recd.

anybody that used for 3month or more,do you have any hair or brown slime algea issues?Everything is doing fine in my tank, and I've been using the product for 6 month now.

I started using

1 bioptim
1 ReefBooster

a week ... and ... the thing I am noticing is cleaner front glass.
Also, SPS seem to extend a little more xenia seem less happy.

Waterquality wise, I see that Alkalinity seems to drop faster ...

Interesting product ... I wish they would give more info on the content :)

Cheers,
Carsten

An update.

I stopped Vodka on the 13th and saw a negative impact so I started it again.

I last dosed digest on May 20th. I am now out so I am going to go with RF Genesis, Fuel and Vodka and see if not using Prodibio has any impact. I will use ReefBooster cuz I like it. :)

Over all the tank corals look great. PE is less than in the past but it was crazy before so I don't mind and it is possible my Potters could be partly to blame.

Pocci's PE is nil during the day so I ordered K-Balance from Zeo along with Pohl's CV. Color HAS improved in the last week.

I still have some cyano and I need to clean my front every two days. Skimmers are pulling more out since I reintroduced Vodka. Since I felt the Vodka hindered coralline I am dosing some Strontium. I believe the front stayed cleaner with Vodka too.

I re-arranged the tank and I finally feel things are where they need to be and I can sit back and watch 'em grow.

I am working on getting some pics.

How is everyone else doing?

Here are some before and after pics. My camera stinks but you can see enough to have an opinion. The first before was not taken with my camera. The coral was baby blue but not like it is today.

OK, so I reviewed the info in the new Delbeek and Sprung book, ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œThe Reef Aquarium Vol. IIIââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ This book is worth every penny and I highly recommend it! This book addresses all the complex issues of how to run and build a successful reef. It is like no other starters book out there.

The info on the Vodka method may be found on pg 274-276.

It describes that a carbon source (specifically vodka) is valuable for stimulating growth of heterotrophic bacteria. It does not say anything in regards to colonizing monocultures. The following comment posted earlier from ReeFresh seems to be a bit bias and may be nothing more than a selling tactic:
"Some European methods use vodka as a carbon source. Vodka is a terribly stupid thing to use as a carbon source in aquariums since it encourages the wrong types of bacteria to grow (Mostly autotrophic as opposed to heterotrophic). It also rapidly results in monocultures of that species and over time you end up with aquariums filled with bacteria that do not provide any real nutrient export."

Unless supportive studies have been conducted, I am timid to believe these claims, when a reputable author states the exact opposite.

So the book describes that bacteria work in this fashion: Bacteria assimilate phosphate and nitrate from the water column. The biomass is then removed by protein skimming. When phosphate and nitrates are in abundance in the aquarium, a carbon source becomes the limiting agent necessary for the bacteria to grow. Therefore, providing a carbon source like vodka will permit the bacteria to multiply. The recommended dosage rate is 5ml-10ml per day per 1000L (260gallons). It is also discussed that forced biomass production reduces the incidence of bacterial infections that cause RTN disease. Dosing should start gradually and increased in slow steps. Furthermore, overdosing may be associated with algal blooms.

My new 110tall tank was setup on 5-17-06. I have been waiting patiently to get the Prodibio products but, have begun dosing Salifertââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s All-in-One, Natural Iodine, Amino Acids and generic vodka since day one. I moved in a bunch of sps corals and had some issues with RTN and poor PE in the first week. The RTN quickly resolved with better temp control, but STN persisted to a few corals on the left side of the tank. Week two proved to be ugly with a cyano bloom covering the sandbed and bi-daily biofilms that coated the glass. I limited the lighting times to MH only on a schedule of 8hrs. The tank is now on week three of life and the biofilms have been minimized. I clean the glass about every other day. The RTN and STN has stopped. I have a few corals that are still bleached. I also have a few with poor PE, but more than half the corals have shown good PE and coloration. The most noticeable are an orange digi that went pink!, a green pocillipora that looks fuzzy all over, and a purple tip tri-color nana that displays a deep purple color.
My 110gallon total system water should get 2-4ml of vodka per day. I am at 3ml per day and have seen excellent PE the last couple days. I will go up to 4ml per day and hold there.

I hope these observations prove helpful for someone. I will try to post pics tomorrow.

This is very similar to what I experienced when I began using the vodka method. I went with vinegar instead of vodka and added it with kalk to my topoff water. This let me add a bit more calcium to the tank by slightly buffering the ph spike. PE became phenomenal, protien skimmer efficiency improved and macro growth improved noticeably.

Lookin at the statement regarding why "vodka" may be construed as a bad idea. Here's a few comments.

1) when dosed Alcohol is consumed twice. First it is processed by aerobic bacteria into Acetic acid. This is an aerobic, hetertrophic process.

2) The Acetic acid is then broken down again by a mixture of autotrophs and heterotrophs.

The reasoning behind the claim that dosing may create a "bacterial monoculture" is likely related to the fact that when you fertilize an environment, the organisms most readily available to utilize the new resource will begin to out compete other organisms that are less efficient at using the resource.

Since we want to encourage the growth of non-photosynthetic non-substrate dwelling bacteria to facilitate nutrient export it would make sense that we dose a material that can be easilly broken down by aerobic organisms providing them energy in addition to a carbon source.

cool info. Thanks. The book also mentioned the vinegar addition as you described in conjunction with kalkwasser. It did not make receommendations to use it as a straight carbon source. I wonder if this is what is in the refresh stuff?!

Maybe it is. Has anyone like Randy Holmes-Farley performed any testing on the chemical make of the product?

For what its worth I do hope that this adventure proves well worth the money spent. I am concerned that some of you have reported negative issues with soft corals. To be quite honest I don't do any skimming on my 75 gallon tank and I run no Ca-Reactor and my SPS colors look great. I have a mix of sps, lps, and softies and coloration seems to have never been a problem. As a matter of fact the only issue I am seeing is a very little nitrate in the tank and some phosphate that I am trying to reduce through water changes.

Outside of that I haven't uses a skimmer in 2 years or more. I do use carbon filter pads though.

I do plan on watching this thread closely to see how all you make out. I am always a little cautious about spending money unnecessarily in this hobby because things can be expensive.

Thanks for sharing your info so far.

Bill, the biotics method is probably not for you then. The method of dosing bacteria and a fuel source (like vodka) to feed them, requires HEAVY skimmer to remove the biomasses after the bacteria have assimilated PO4 and NO3.

I'm not sure you would have success without a skimmer. You are more likely to have alga blooms is my guess.

Possibly. Of course I was told that when I decided not use a skimmer either and I don't have algae blooms. I can testify that having a very good clean up crew and periodic water changes eliminates that issue. I also keep caulpera in my sump and periodically thin it out.

I was thinking that this might actually clear the my water up some and help eliminate Phosphates and my low Nitrates that I have recently.

Thanks,
Bill
