Prognosis of Elegance Coral

See image in my gallery. I purchased this one week. It has steadily gone downhill. It has never opened since I put it in the tank. How do you determine if it should be removed from the tank because it is dead? I really hope this is not the case.

Sad to say but it wont be coming back. If its that far down into the skeleton its a casualty.
Elegance are getting harder and harder to keep in a tank than they used to be. Some have had luck with them but for the most part they seem to slowly just lose health and die.

Yes, that Elegance is gone. If you want an Elegance, give your tank some time to clean all the infection out, then buy an Australian Elegance.

Thank you very much for the quick replies and information. How should I dispose of it? If it is still alive but not going to make it, is there a humane way?

Is it showing signs of an infection? It would ease my mind somewhat to know that it wasn't related to my water chemistry. As I indicated I have not even had it in the tank for a week.

The coral in the pic is already dead. There is no way of knowing what killed it. When large animals like Elegance corals or sea anemones die, there are many different microbes that quickly begin to break down their tissues. When this happens their population explodes, and they can begin attacking healthy animals in the tank. This is the infection I was talking about. The skeleton needs to be removed ASAP. It is going to smell very, very bad. You may want to think about doing a partial water change as well.

My friend lost an Aussie elegance that he had for 2 months and that was in my
tank for at maybe 4 before that. While they seem to have a better track record than the
Indonesian variety, they are by no means bullterproof.

I wouldn't consider any of the animals we keep "bullet proof". I have never been able to keep a bubble tip anemone alive, but everyone else can.

The Aussie Elegance corals are sooooooooo much healthier than the Indo Elegance when we get them. They don't even act like the same animal.

I've had mine for about 4 months , I don't feed it and it has actually double in size since I bought it.The lfs said it came from Indonesia.
