Proof that CV and HCAA work for sps(take 2)

I don't like to argue .... There are several ways to run a beatiful reef.
I've seen several sweet zeo and non zeo tanks...... dsbs, bb's ... The key always seems to be boil down to husbandry and how dedicated the owners are.
Lightened sps and "looking like crap" can equate to a lot of things that have nothing to do with a nutrient poor tank., low/high alk, red bugs, unstable flucuating salinity/temp/ph, , flatworms, dirty water, old bulbs to name a few.

Yea, Mario, dont you know you're supposed to change your bulbs!...

:D

Anyways Mario...
Zeo , Non Zeo is always going to be a disagreement ... Even the supplements which are freaking expensive!

PM me Hugo's store addy so I can stop by... ;)

Hey John, dont worry I know that ist always going to be this way. Its just like SSB,DSB, its a never ending cycle. Just pm Hugo I dont know the addy to the shop but I know how to get there. As far as my algae problem dont know why its there. Water changes every week 25g, RO/di water=0ppm, p04=0 w/ salifert and nitrates =0 with salifert. I did find something out today. My beckett skimmer was not getting enogh air/water mix so I upgraded the air intake valve to a 3/8 valve instade of the 1/4 valve. I know have expresso color skimmate with the cremma on top. I will still post picture of the corals and my thank. I will post some tomorrow once I do my water change.

Oh and my bulbs are brand new just bought from Reefgeeks one month ago. So that rules out lighting.

Its all good bro...
Its an ongoing battle... We're all trying to simulate the ocean in a little box...
Its funny.. Im never satisfied with my tank... yet people stop by and think its looking good...

I just swapped out my Phoenix 14k's for the Helios 20k 250 DE's..........
Way brighter.. my old bulbs we're done but it took someone else looking at my tank to tell me......

Man, last time I try to be funny... :P

I'm no zeo fan either, actually. IMO most stuff is just a pacebo effect. After you spend $50, you better believe it works. Just in this case several people I know who previously swore never to fall for such gimmicks turned around and said they saw noticibly increased growth and color. I just want to get my hands on some and take it to the lab and see whats in it first...

Hi Mchava, Thank you for starting this thread and please do continue to post updates. I am very curious to see the results of the AAHC and CV in a non-ZEO tank. I hear you on the algae. I maintain very diligent husbandry methods, have a BB tank with 75x turnover, have a BK 400 rated for a tank 4x my size, do 25% water changes weekly, and keep my nutrient imports as low as possible, yet I still get a couple patches of bryopsis that won't go away. One suggestion I have for you is to get a quality PO4 colorimeter (Hanna, Hach, etc.) or a good quality PO4 test kit (Merck/Deltec, Hach, etc.). When I used Salifert, it was always undetectable. But when I finally broke down and bought a Hanna I found that it was at .09. With such a precision instrument it is interesting to monitor what each little change (increased feedings, decreased feedings, larger water changes, etc.) have on the PO4 reading. If I feed every other day I can keep it down to .04, if I feed a little more than usual it goes up to .12. This might help you to monitor where your PO4 is really at. But even then, I have a buddy that also gets some bryopsis growth in his tank. He has a 58 and only 3 tiny fish that he feeds lightly every other day. He has great husbandry practices. We thought it was the PO4 even though his Salifert always tested 0. We were suprised to see that it only tested .02 on a Hach colrimeter. This tells me there is more to bryopsis than just PO4 or bad husbandry. We are all trying to maintain a natural reef but if you go diving you will see that all reefs also have some hair algae. Sorry for the rant, just sharing.:)

Hey thanks Travis. I am saving up to get the Hanna colormeter. Since I just purchased a ACjr its going to have to wait alittle longer. I will keep you all posted. I am of to do a water change.

This is true. Sometimes what happens is that the algae patches will trap detritus between the filaments and as the detritus decomposes, it creates a localized increase in PO4 concentration, thereby feeding that patch while the overall tank concentration would be too low for it to grow. (Dont forget, that it doesnt need any PO4 to stay alive, it just needs it to grow).

Travis - i agree po4 is VERY much variable day to day. that is why i need a colorimeter.

my tank was the 58gal he was talking about. i HATE bryopsis!! the patches i have are impossible to get rid of. but they are getting slowly smaller. i blow off the detritus EVERY night out of the bryopsis to try to get rid of it. i hope it goes away soon...speaking of that i have to pluck some of the growth tonight

tankslave - i blow it out every night for that reason. guess it could feed off it the rest of the day and night. it does grow very slowly now though

I got to the point of going at it with a toothbrush, which was surprisingly effective. Threw in a sallylightfoot too, which seemed to help clean up the small little strands.

Ultimately what Bomber told me was what i found to be true. Just attack it with several methods, and be incredibly vigilant, and after a long time, it started to go away.

a tooth brush???!!! you didn't spread it that way?

i thought about zip tieing a tooth brush to some small diameter tubeing and run it down to my sump into a filter sock. that way i don't loose water but i catch the strands

:)

Yea, surprisingly, it just filtered out, once it was in the water column. Replaced the filter floss about an hour later, of course. But it didnt really spread, it was just a couple of patches that wouldnt want to die, but no new ones sprung up.

well i'm gonna get a filter sock this weekend and i'll siphon and brish. i pulled some last night :( that is just boring

How can I find out more info on the zeo method. I might be a candidate for this method as I have only sps and lots a fish. Thiers always something new to learn and I want to educate myself before doing anything to my reef. Books are what I need.

or you could type zeovit in the RC search and see what you find... :D

(I'm sure you'll find more than you wanted...)
