Proof that Oceanic Salt is BAD!!!!

Okay, here are my test results from mixing one gallon of saltwater earlier today. And for those wanting specifics, this is 1 gallon of Ro/Di water and some salt, stirred a few times, and left on the counter for about 4 hours. No airstone, nothing exciting.

Temp 72F
Sg: 1.026
NO3: 0
PO4: 0
Alk: 7.4dKH
Ca: 570ppm
Si: 0

So I'm mixing 54g of water now for my tank, and have zero doubts. I'll just add some baked baking soda to raise alkalinity before using it.

My alk is always at 8.2 dkh with the Oceanic maybe because i aerate for 24 HR.
 
Probably. I think in the past it was 8.0, but this particular gallon wasn't. My tank tends to run at 10dKH or higher, so buffering it with baked baking soda will help it match the display. The livestock won't notice the water change at all.
 
I was very happy that I was able to use another 2 jugs of Oceanic on my driveway after the snow storm yesterday.

Oh no, not this again...

I don't know how many times I heard this from people who switched to Crystal Seas and had problems. Not to say it's impossible, I just got tired of hearing about some "mysterious chemical reaction" when so many people had absolutely no such thing occur switching to Crystal Seas. Personally, I started off on IO, then switched to Marine Environment without issue, then switched to Crystal Seas without issue, then to Oceanic without issue. I'll probably switch to Tropic Marin after I use up this Oceanic that I just bought, and I expect to switch without issue once again.
 
I can offer all involved my attempt to conduct a blind study of any major salt mix you wish and supply you with the results.

Believe it or not, I actually paid toward a salt study almost 2 years ago, and still haven't seen any results. I don't plan to donate again. :(

I was simply commenting on the posts that I had read. That's what it looked like.

I switched from IO to Oceanic and so far haven't had any issues that I can tell.
 
So can we say this is the FINAL thread on this subject? Did not think so. Sounds like Marc just showed in his batch that all is well and kicking. I showed myself in my batch that all was well and kicking, and so did the club in their batches. I think we tend to blame our husbandy problems on other things or jump on the bandwagon a bit. How many opposers can really pinpoint it to a salt? Of course all will say yes, but really. If the salt was THAT terrible would it be on the market? When someone besides a naysayer test it it comes out clean each time.

Just my 2 pennies and just so you all know, I dont even use Oceanic, but I bought a jug just to prove all this nonsense wrong and I have not had a bad test or tank I ran the jug in. Go figure I had nothing wrong to blame something else for!!
 
I also have had bad experiences using oceanic. I switched to it and did a 20 gallon water change in my 75 gallon reef. By the end of the week I had outbreaks of hair and other types of algae. I use RODI water with TDS of 0 to mix my water. Coincedence? Maybe, but its enought to keep me away from it as I finally am getting rid of all the algae.
 
Well, quite frankly I am about done with this thread too, but since we are putting our two cents worth.... I don't understand why since nobody has any CERTAIN proof one way or another, why people that think the salt is fine have to make comments about those who are more skeptical like 'they are witch hunters' or 'blame your bad husbandry skills' or other derogatory things. The product is still fairly new and there is a TON of chemicals in that stuff other than the ones that the people on here are testing. Not to mention the distinct possibility that IF it is the salt it could be the result of some other contaminant being introduced during the production process. Something that is not showing up in any tests. Something that can be tolerated or absorbed in some systems better than others. To say that "look, I tested these few items and they are OK so you have to be wrong (and stupid{implied})" is closed minded and disrespectful. I know human nature says that more unhappy people are going to speak out than the ones that are happy, but it seems that there are alot of experienced people giving their opinion on this thread with evidence that is at least worth considering. Not to mention without knowing anything about their system, knowledge, or habits to say it HAS to be their husbandry is jumping to conclusions with less evidence than I have seen presented here about the salt issues. Anyway, this thread has turned ugly so I am giving up. Thanks as always everyone for sharing and I will continue to use logic and deductive reasoning and experience to solve my problems and work through my theories.
 
I am sure there are valid points on whatever side anyone wants to take. But proof is proof. Here I am NOT an Oceanic fan whatsoever (why because RC said it was "bad") so I used another salt, then I read all this malarkey and say this is bullcrap. So yes we tested what we could to find out what was wrong and we found out through our testing there was nothing wrong!! BUT the naysayers test seemed to always show a PO4 reading or an AMM read of 03. Okay I say I have nOTHING to loose since i dont give a crap one way or the other, so I convince myself and 15 others to buy this so called poison to find the truth and 5 of us bought out of state and the rest only 2 bought from the same store (from what I was told. By far this was no Harvard experiment) We each used this so called poisen and nothing happened. All is well! How do you explain that AlienSpawn? You cant just as I cant explain why I cant test EVRYTHING in a salt mix! Bottom line is there is NO PROOF WHATSOEVER that this mix causes all these problems, so as a group of people we tend to start blaming things instead of focusing on a real problem. Amazing before the RO/DI phase we blamed algea on what? We PROVED it was P04 in the water table so now we all use RO/DI and the thought was proven correct, we have NO proof that Oceanic salt mix causes algea problems, BUT we can prove that husbandry problems are the MOST likely cause of this problem whether you want to admit it or not! Like I said before I dont use it, so argue all you guys want, I just think it is crappy to say CRAP about a company with NO proof and just because ten other people (with NO proof say so) Your right I am done with this malarkey!
 
Sorry Scuba you can't blame it all on husbandry or young tanks. Not when several people, including myself, have reported that the mixing containers have the slime. These are containers that never see light only RO/DI water and salt. That are cleaned regularly. That are ALWAYS covered except for power cords to run the PH and heater.

I am really happy you didn't have a problem. But please don't insult those of us who did and have proven the salt is doing some unusual things. To us.

I never once said that I was blaming anyone! AND this was NO insult on anyone, the only insult I see is to Oceanic (which if you read is not my problem)

As for an insult, none was meant, AND I would never insult another person. As I stated, there were no problems with many people, as to say your problem, I know nothing about. I am sure there were problems with the salt. I have also read threads that say IO causes algea, Red Sea, ect.. but my point is where does the bandwagon start and the reality start? I am sure ther were problems (if not mind made then man made).
 
I've been using Oceanic for more than 2 years w/o any problem tho. Once, I got a little red slim out break. However, it turned out my RO/DI filter gone bad. Changed new filters, the problem fixed.
