Proof that Oceanic Salt is BAD!!!!

Those RC params look pretty good. I know it's a bit of a pain, but I had a bunch of Oceanic that I just bought and so I decided to do something that would allow me to use it. I'll try it for awhile and if I get good results I might stay with it, otherwise I might try RC next time. I'm going to have tried every salt there is pretty soon :)

I did think about the fact that I would also potentially be adding the bad things from two salts, but I guess it's a trade off. Kind of like spreading risk among investments... Or not.

Before and After

Before and After

This is what my tank looked like the day I started this post. That was after ten days of 20% water changes using oceanic. My tank looked like this for weeks and I nearly tore it down

This is my tank as of 20 minutes ago. Since I started the post I made four 10% changes using instant ocean.

Everything else is the same.

Wow that's crazy. Something must have been wrong with that batch of Oceanic or else something very strange happened to your tank.

Here's one from before I figured out it was the salt.

It was bad news! I didn't nothing to the tank except water changes with Oceanic. At the time of the pic I had almost no bio load.

i use oceanic, i have no problems now, but when i first started to use it, i did have a little bit of a bloom. but i was using RC before that and just switched slowly to oceanic, with water changes. that was my last tank, my new tank i just used oceanic, and didnt have one bit of that nastyness. so i dont know what happen to your tank and why it did that. but you should use whatever you have the best results with, and just dont use oceanic.

I'm positive it was a bad batch of salt that made it to AZ. There are a lot of local reefers that are have the exact same problem.

The good buckets I used which were most of them were great. I never imagined it could have been the salt. Just my bad luck I suppose.

this sould be the tank of the month
lol

maybe you should send this pic to oceanic

dzhuo- so both Mg. and Ca are low in IO salt?

Not always, but I make sure my new salt is exactly the same as the water in the tank.
I thought IO was consistent? it sounds just as bad as Oceanic
You guys crack me up

Maybe but IO doesn't have some nasty brown algae that is dormant until you use it.!!!

Ouch that tank LOOKS like poor Husbandry, if i may say so.

I've been using "Oceanic Salt" for almost 3 yrs now, on 3 tanks and have yet to have any kind of issue, espically something of that nature.

maybe your whole bucket was contaminated, or bad H20 to start?

Tank does look much better now!

Cheers.

Bingo! You got it! The bad/incompatible (for whatever reason) oceanic masquerades as poor husbandry. Take it from someone who knows!

Hey guys, Ive been away from Reef Central for a while, very few posts here an there...

Well after 5 years of using Instant Ocean, I decided 2 months ago to try the Oceanic salt in the fancy bottel 20g formula, well I have made three 5g water changes and my reef tank looks worst than ever, didnt know why until I READ the first couple of posts from this thread...

I have 5g lefts of Oceanic salt mix, should I use it or just leave it alone?

BACK to Instant Ocean...

PS. I didnt get that crazy algae bloom just very stressed out corals for more than a month now, with half expansion and half the usual bright colors...

 haha! lol! Maybe we should start a thread of uses for left over Oceanic salt!

Naw, the driveway would start sprouting brown weeds in the summertime and the neighbors will blame your poor yard work skills. :-)
