Prop..... Frag..... ?

Hi Guys,

I'm fairly new to actually owning a SW tank (although I've had a passion for it and marine biology in general for 10+ years). Anyway, I was just wondering what the difference was between the PROP and Frag meetings? Is the PROP one an auction and the other just a meet-up/selling group?

How many folks usually participate?

Can a newb such as myself go to one with nothing to sell/trade - just looking to possibly buy?

Do people just bring their items for sale in a bucket? Is a tank set-up?

Are the meetings always held at that joint on Thomas?

I'd just love some details!! :)

I'd like to come to one - probably in September when I have some extra "fish/reefing" money to blow. ;)

Basically, I just want to know what to expect. :)

Your questions in order:

Yes, around 20-30, Of course you can, they are usually brought in tupperwares or something similar, for now yes

Welcome to the group :)

welcome to the group too!! its a good way to get some corals it is set up at least once a month but the auction is already set for a year but its a good way to meet and grab some coral, most of mine are from meets and auction and newbies like us are always welcome and so is the family that we tag along :)

Wonderful!! I'm such a shy chick, but I'm going to get my wits together and definitely try to go to the PROP or FRAG (whichever one happens in Sept). :) I'm excited!!!

Also, I love your signature... I'm a BIG Simpsons buff. :)

They are just fun laid back meetings. People post stuff they selling about a week before the meet that you can "call" and people just bring a lot as well. Good food and drinks too. Bring as much money as you can hehe. My first couple meetings and auctions I went nuts buying things.

Oh! Another question: Do people every bring critters along? Crabs, snails, etc...? Or is it strictly corals? Or are the snails/crabs/fish even... more of a pre-planned bring-along/purchase?

The meets are awesome. There's some long term members/volunteers who have a wealth of knowledge and have really devoted themselves to developing this community into what feels like an extended family. My hats off to those people.

It's mostly corals, but you'll find other critters listed occasionally. I just sold a brittle star and a pair of clownfish at the meet on Saturday.

p.s. - if you want to carry on my legacy, I'd recommend bringing your frags to the meets in washed yogurt cups.

Coral frags are definitely the most common things to change hands at FRAG meetings, probably followed by bags of macroalgae.

Sales of crabs, fish, etc. are usually arranged ahead of time. Catching and bagging a fish without a pre-arranged buyer would be more hassle than it's worth.

FRAG meetings are very laid-back affairs, except for the rare occasions when we have guest speakers. There are no dues, and you don't have to register as a member to attend. Come on out in September!

WELCOME!
Hi Guys,
I'm fairly new to actually owning a SW tank (although I've had a passion for it and marine biology in general for 10+ years). Anyway, I was just wondering what the difference was between the PROP and Frag meetings? Is the PROP one an auction and the other just a meet-up/selling group?

FRAG consists of the forum here on RC and a once a month meeting for SW hobbyists. The designated FRAG meetings are informal, relaxing, and fun! There is a thread started at the beginning of the week for buying, selling, trading or goods.

FRAG hosts the PROP auction every other month. PROP is a group of reefers who hold auctions and use a small % to buy new amazing and RARE corals to offer to our members. See the PROP thread for details and rules.

How many folks usually participate?:)

Anywhere from 20 to upwards of 80 when we have guest speakers.

Can a newb such as myself go to one with nothing to sell/trade - just looking to possibly buy? :)

Yep. At the frag meetings there are no requirements for selling or buying. Any one can buy sell trade at anytime. RC however does have rules so be sure if your selling items on RC you comply with the terms and conditions.

Do people just bring their items for sale in a bucket? Is a tank set-up?

There is not a tank set up at out local meeting place. It is actually a sports bar with food and drinks. Most reefers bring styro/plastic cups with lids as it protects the corals a bit more than a bag however bags are fine of course if you choose. Most members also bring a cooler of some sort to transport all the goodies home.

Are the meetings always held at that joint on Thomas?

Yes. People are welcome to set up other get togethers however not under the "FRAG" name. FRAG meetings are held at pranksters unless a thread is started that states otherwise.

I'd just love some details!!

At the top of our forum you will find 2 threads, one for PROP and one for FRAG, all information on meeting dates can be found there as well as other useful info such as rules for PROP.

I'd like to come to one - probably in September when I have some extra "fish/reefing" money to blow.

Sounds great!

Basically, I just want to know what to expect.

Expect to use the ATM at least once at each meeting lol!!! Really; expect a great bunch of people with a HUGE combined knowledge and real love for the hobby in a laid back get together with some awesome corals.
