Proper cycling

@bjtrapjr just curious are you using API tests? They are so confusing to read. Under incandescent light ammonia looks like 5+ppm under florescent it looks more like 2ppm. I put in a bottle of Bio Spira after taking the shrimp out (I know thats taboo but whatever) and nitrite is through the roof now. It really did help, not as a miracle potion, but to jump start the cycle. Hopefully the ammonia will begin to decrease now.

Yes I'm using a api test kit I've done a total of a 40 percent water change and it still hasn't came down but I haven't tested since like 8 pm last night so I will probably test again later

Wow is there anything that could be screwing the results. I did a 1 gal water change and it went from 8ppm to below 4ppm. That was yesterday, today ammonia is between .5 and .25

It's only taboo if you accept any opinion without critical assessment.

I have no clue I talked to my lfs he told me to drop a ammonia filter in dose with 1 ml of prime I did that at 6 and just tested and it still looks like 8 ppm so I will probably dose with prime again tomorrow am and check again in the afternoon and if that doesn't help I'm lost I might just drain it and try to start over

I think I left mine in alittle too long. I had 2 LG shrimp in for a week and a half and now I can get the ammonia to drop below 8 ppm

Are you making sure the water surface it being agitated so the water is well oxygenated? Also, did the lfs store verify the ammonia level? It's possible to have a bad test kit (I've had a brand new Red Sea alk test be bad). Also, are you using any water conditioner for removing chlorine/chloramines? Those can give false readings as well. I'd also test nitrite and nitrate. I doubt there's any reading if ammonia is truly that high, but it won't hurt to double check. If there is, you'll know the cycle has at least started.

I have the filter running and it seems to be moving water at a good rate. Yes the lfs verified twice with 2 vials each time and no I'm not using any water conditioner just dosed with prime to try and bring it down alittle and I'll try nitrates and nitrites but it's working fine on my other tank

I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish with Prime.

1. ammonia exists as free ammonia (toxic to fish) and ammonium (nontoxic) in aqueous solution. Free ammonia + ammonium = total ammonia
2. Some additives such as Prime form complexes with ammonia rendering the free ammonia nontoxic. With Prime, total ammonia = ammonia (toxic)+complexed ammonia (nontoxic)+ammonium (nontoxic). The purpose of Prime is to convert most, if not all, of toxic ammonia to non-toxic forms. The total ammonia level, however, does not change with the addition of Prime.
3. Your API kit measures total ammonia. You should not expect to see a decrement in your test kit, nor should you expect lower total ammonia, with the addition of Prime. Prime has zero effect of total ammonia.
4. The only way to decrease total ammonia is through removal-either by water changes or by something "eating" it, like nitrifying bacteria (which you are trying to grow by giving nitrogenous food-i.e. ammonia)

So again, your use of Prime serves an unclear purpose at this time, and likely wasting money. Fine if you don't care, but my original advice remains: stop messing with the tank and enjoy what remains of the summer. Check back in a couple weeks.
