Proper qt tank cycling

I keep a sponge for the QT tank filter in my DT sump to keep it seeded. Then When I need the QT tank I fill with NSW and add the sponge to the filter. Done...

I toss a new filter sponge into my sump to have another one seeded incase I have to use any copper based meds in QT I will not reuse the sponge.

This what I do as well.
I use a air powered one that has replaceable sponges.

Sponge filters are relatively cheap.

I am getting ready to set up a 24/7 QT as I plan on getting a PBT and will probably need it. I am going to use a little seeded LR and a skimmer and it should be good to go pretty quick.

Note: never put that LR back into your DT system unless you cook the hell outta it.

I started a permanent QT by just adding ammonia and some biomax, was never able to get the nitrites down and get the tank fully cycled so I said screw it. Now I have a foam piece in my DT for the next month and im just going to go that route....not saying you cant get a tank cycled that one way but I have seen some people on here have problems getting that going.

Some good info here on it and this is a pretty ongoing thread so if you have any more question I would just ask here.

As long as you are not exposing the LR to copper why can't you can put it back into the main? If you are putting a fish from the same QT into the main why not the rock?

Very true, I guess I assume a QT will have meds at some point. If you are not going to use meds its okay.

Unless you are talking about an invert QT, where a smaller copy of the main display may be called for, I don't really get the notion of a 24/7 fish QT frankly. I set mine up as needed.
