protective grate assistance

Is there a closer mesh protective grate available or does anyone have a DIY idea to share, my wife's goby decided to graze behind the grate.

You could use the plastic mesh used for sewing, I believe they call it cross stitch, you sew a picture on a plastic mesh and they come in various sizes. Anything smaller will have a substantial reduction on the flow and on non controllable pumps may affect the ability of the pump to correct direction.
