protein skimmer break in

I just bought the aquamaxx am150 to replaced a used protein skimmer i got from someone else.

the instructions say for the water level to be from 8-10 inches, but no more than 10 inches.

questions:

1. is it suppose to be overflowing like crazy out of the collection cup as part of the break in?

2. could i have the water level at say 15 inches, instead of 10 inches?

please help

15" may very well be to deep. Put it on a stand, or adjust the volume of the "box" it's sitting in. If a skimmer sits in water that is too deep, it could very well overflow like your's is.

i had to run mine too deep, until i built a platform to hold it deeper out of the water, so i left all the valves wide open. i had the foam adjuster set at half way and the water shot out the top like a geyser.

if your outlet on the skimmer is covered you will get overflow in the cup (not the only reason) as the skimmer doesnt handle much back pressure at all.

Can you adjust the valve to keep the water/bubble level more in line with the neck of the skimmer?

thank you everyone. i got something to leverage it up a little more. also, i cut off the inner walls of the sump tank a couple of inches to put the water levels at 9.5 inches.
