Protein Skimmer - hourly usage?

Is there a minimum amount of time that a PS becomes effective? This sounds like a dumb question.. but I used to run a PS as a HOT.. i can't find the skimmer online right now, but if required, i can find a link.

anyway, one day I was at work, and again while I was sleeping, the skimmer overflowed and dumped about 5+ gallons onto my carpet. So I stopped using it. I recently started getting some algae on my sand, and i'm sure a protein skimmer would help solve the issue, so I would liek to use another one, but I'm paranoid about the overflow happening again.

i've been considering the coralife super-skimmer, but again, I'm afraid of over flow, so I'm curious if its going to help at all, running it for a fwe horus at night while i'm home and can monitor it. And longer hours on weekends.

Or, if you have recommendations, to ensure that it doesn't over flow? Or if certain skimmers are useful, and less prone to over flow. It must be HOT, as I do not have a sump. It's a non drilled, 46 gallon bow front, and the stand it is on, does not have room for a sump, its an open shelf design.

I think its a mod that you need to make. Basically drill a hole in the collection cup and with some sort of fitting you can run it to a bucket.

Look into the Tunze DOC skimmers. They perform well, can be mounted inside the tank and are no more intrusive than a small overflow box.

wow thats a cool concept, but its a bit out of my price range.. the SS's are supposed to be pretty good and are around 100 bucks.
