Protein Skimmer Pump Replacement

I have a Current protein skimmer that the pump motor has failed. My local store sold me Rio+ 1700. It does not work. What I mean is that the pump works but does not work with my protein skimmer. The Rio pump has an output venturi but that seemed odd to me because the old pump had the air drawn into the pump intake.

Am I doing something wrong or am I right in thinking that I need to get a different pump or the needle wheel conversion kit which has an intake venturi?
