Soo i just recently learned I am going to be a father. And I'm extremely excited for it but now I'm on a budget and was wondering if anyone can tell me how to build a hob skimmer for a 38 gallon.

I'll leave advice on how to build your own to others, but there are some pretty cheap nano skimmers out there. 38g isn't "nano," but they might do the trick if the budget demands it and you otherwise have good filtration in the tank.

I would be surprised if you could build it cheaper than buying used or even new for that matter...

What all of them said. Check out the for sale forum here, or easier yet, take a look at a local forum - I'm also a member of www.corareef.org - Central Ohio Reef Aquarists somebody is always looking to sell off the old stuff so they can upgrade!

There's also clubs in the Dayton and Cleveland areas.

Shop around for an older used hob skimmer. What is your budget? You can usually find aquac remoras for about $40-60. Aquamaxx hob run up around $100. If you can afford between $40-100 then I'd save yourself the headache of a diy skimmer.
