Do you have it in just regular water to test it? because it won't create any foam, if its in salt water it would take a while to 'break in' takes about 2 weeks.

yeah, its going to need some time to build up a layer of organic film on the inside which allows the foam to really start rising properly.

It comes in with manufacturing 'oils' on it and if you wash it in vinegar and rub it clean-dry using pure white vinegar that will help cut the break-in time.

No, just use a paper towel to wipe out the cup; never use soap on what's going to go in tank.

It may start skimming sooner than 2 wks. Mine started in the next day.

But it starts 'skimming' the moment you plug it in, in that it's making water foam; it just takes a while for the foam/froth to work its way up the column. WHat you can say is that the crap isn't in your tank anymore once it's in whatever part of the skimmer it's in.

It depends on the amount of crud in your tank it has to remove. Best guess is a couple of days. It will be there soon enough and you'll get to get your first wiff of skimate. Ditto another remark, "never use soap on anything going in your aquarium" . Hot water works best to clean the cup. I've even used a garden hose to clean mine out in the yard.
