Protein Skimmers

For years I have had the cheap skimmer that came with my sump. With the water changes I do I could usually keep phoshphate in check (10-20% once a week). Recently, however, I have added a few more fish and my hippo and yellow tang have grown pretty large. So now I have to feed more and keeping the phosphate in check is a little harder. Also, I would like to decrease the amount of water changes I do. Would a new skimmer make a big difference in controlling phosphate? If so, any suggestions for a new one in the 100-150$ range? My tank is 90 gal.

I agree w/ the above, and I would also invest into a PhosBan reactor. We use them at my LFS and they work pretty sweet.

BTW, do you have room for an ASM?

If you want more info on SuperSkimmers, look for a thread by Deuce67 called Coralife Super Skimmer 220 pics or something like that.

I doubt if there is room for an ASM, I was looking for maybe another in sump skimmer. Otherwise I would have to do some annoying plumbing because the only room I have is on the return pump side of the sump. There is NO room behind the tank (well 4in) and literally none beside the tank.

get a super skimmer they work very good.I also have a deltec that I got running both now.The deltec is a hang on I have the super skimmer in my sump.I could run just one but since I have them I figure I might aswell use them. You want to buy a remora pro?I have it sitting in a bin hahahaha. Not such a great skimmer.

Not that I want your remora, but I bet it's better than the piece -o-crap I got fizzing in my sump now.

LoL

I would think the Phosban reactor would be a better choice since it would address the direct problem you're trying to keep in check. They work great.

Yeah, i've been considering the phos ban reactor. There really is no reason not to upgrade my skimmer tho, except the cash. But that hasn't stoped me b4! Thank god for credit!

Finding a place to put a bug chunk of chaetomorpha that you can harvest will do just as much for phosphate export as a phosban reactor.

Having said that, you have to have a good skimmer, especially with two super poopers like the hippo and yellow tangs. $150 limits you to the Coralife, but that's a good buy.
