Protein skimmers??

I have a 50 gallon tank. I would like to get a good protein skimmer and I am a relative newbie. What is the most reliable and efficient protein skimmer. Easy installation would be a plus also, but not to big a deal.

Well first off!!!
[welcome]

If you can afford an Euro Reef, I think they are very nice..
This is what I use on my system and LOVE it...

Used Euro Reefs can be tough to find sometimes because people tend to hang on to them.

If it is hang on type then a CPR Bak Pak with Maxi jet 1200 or remora pro would be good. If it's in sump then Euro Reef is good but pricey, IMO ASM does just as good of a job for a lot less $$$$

I agree with Steve that Euroreefs are good but if money is not an option, then H&S is the best skimmer out there IMO. It is more expensive than a Euroreef but perfomancewise you are getting your money's worth. If price is a major concern though, you might want to consider an asm G1 or G2. they are just about as good as a Euroreef but are usually a bit cheaper, especially used.

Best o' luck!!

Ben- I am glad you found us here at MARS.

I also use a Euroreef skimmer. If you ever want me to come by and take a look at the system and see if we can throw some ideas together, I'd be happy to.

Do you have a sump on your tank? That would help a lot to know what we are working with.

Get a Remora Pro with Mag 5 pump! I had one on my old 75gal and it exceeded my expectation. Never had any problem.

I agree with Funman!!!!!!Euro Reef. If you have to buy new the ASM skimmers are the same design, use the same pumps and are a little lighter on the wallet.

Remoras in my opinion are garbage! HOB in general are not very good.

Had a Euroreef now i have a DAS and i will say get a DAS! GEt the DAS EX1 and never look back it is a great skimmer. It is a recirc skimmer but can also be put in sump.

Check out the lighting. misc section here at reef centrala nd find the DAS thread it is usally within the first 2 pages there are nothing but positives about this skimmer.

I do disagree that ASM do as good of a job as an ER. ER's are way better made also and ASM's are not that cheap anymore

by the way ER and ASM i dont think use the same pumps. ER i believe use Eheims or genx pumps while the ASM uses the Sedra?

DAS uses the aquabee's which are dead silent. But so are teh Eheims but if you get a skimemr with a Eheim that is big $$$$$

here is the DAS thread

how do the Aquabees suck?

I have only had my DAS EX1 for 2 months and nothing but excellent results. super quiet.

My father in law has had an EX3 with 3 aquabees for almost 2 yrs. nothing but excellent results, no issues and when i look over this DAS thread over 36 pages i could not find any issues reported with the Aquabee. So i'm lost how they suck?

They are very finicky IMO. The only thing that drives me crazy about my skimmer is the aquabee pump. I am going to replace it with an eheim. First off the air intake is miniscule so it has to be cleaned out constantly. If there is even one grain of sand that gets in it, it will clog and basically turn the skimmer off. I HATE IT!!!! That is just my personal expierience with it so far. It also likes to just stop turning from time to time and therefore acts like a Catalina pump. I could have just gotten a defective unit but as of now, I am not impressed with the Aquabee. That there is why they suck :D

HOB skimmers I agree are worthless, should you get one the Tunzes IMO are best bang for the buck. Then when you get into that range, you mind as well get into the in sump models. I agree w/everyone here, ER are good enough to get the job done, as well as the ASM. But you should save the $$$ and make it worth your while in this category.
As far as Aquabee pumps sucking. They are more efficient than the Sedra pumps, which the ER, and other skimmers use. Aquabees come second to EHEIM in Europe. If you would look at a lot of the high end European skimmers they use Aquabee pumps all the time. Then the higher ends have EHEIMs. They very efficient when compared to Mags, or Sedras. Less energy = less heat.

ok we agree on HOB's:)

But i think DAS is best bang for buck. $285 for a DAS EX1 recircualting skimmer. For a 50 gallon tank an EX1 will kill it!

I have a 60 cube with 55 gallon sump and the EX1 is plenty of skimmer for the job.

I dont own or have i ever seen a Tunze in action. heard great things though.

I just like Recirc skimmers better. cause you can use them in sump or out. In sump skimmers to me can be finiky if your water levels fluctuate<sp

From what i have heard the Octopus skimmers i often see posted as a best bang for you buck skimmer and tehy are dirt cheap and made pretty darn well

this one is only $154

only $179 for one a little bigger

these 2 are both in sump only skimmers

Hey Mark

Here is the really silly thing about this. I sort of inherited my tank and a place was taking care of it until i started doing it myself a year ago. There is a skimmer and I have been fooling with it and trying to get it working, reading and everything. It discovered yesterday thanks to the RC advice I received that it is a CPR skimmer. So, sounds like it is a decent skimmer, I just need to get it working. It doesn't foam, and i fiddle with the pump all the time. The pump seems to have plenty of power....just no bubbles really. I do have a sump.

Paul, you don't like the AB's?? I liked my H&S A150. It was a great little skimmer. Unfortunately, the eheims draw too much air for the 150mm or 6" body on your H&S. you need at least a 200mm or 8" body at 24" tall for an eheim!

ER uses Eheims on their RC models 180 and up, so there really isn't much of a difference between them and H&S/deltec any longer. Sure there are some small things, but the pump is what makes a needle wheel skimmer good. Now they all use the same pumps on their larger skimmers, so its kinda a wash. Pick one and run with it.

Jim

I will put in a second vote for the DAS EX1 recircualting skimmer. It is an awsome skimmer for the price. Compare it to the H&S A150 or Deltec AP600. As for as the AB pumps go, some of the best skimmers use them (ATI, H&S, Deltec ect.)
