PSA: Check your RO membranes

I know summer is a slow time for reefing, but double check your membranes. I noticed rodi production had slowed down significantly, but couldn't figure it out. Changed my membrane today and that thing was filthy. Water production is much better now and hopefully di resin will last longer. I took the opportunity to upgrade my membrane to 100 gpd as well.

How often are you changing your ro membranes?

I run dual 75gpd membranes and average 3-5 years on them. I do run a sediment prefilter and two different sizes of carbon filters before the membranes. I change those cartridges out twice a year. I make a lot of water too.

Wait wait wait. You change your sediment filter out twice a year? Holy batshit Batman! This is no lie but I have to change mine every 100-150 gallons of rodi water made. If I don't I burn through resin. It's so bad I am seriously thinking of buying a canister and putting a 5 micron sediment filter before my 1 micron. A full BRS canister of resin will last me around 450 gallons and that is if I change sediment filter out 3x.

Just for reference incoming TDS is in the 560 range. Local water supplier also adds chloramines. Small rural water that pulls water directly out of the Mississippi. I almost wonder if they even filter it with TDS that bad.

Yeah, I make a ton of water with zero TDS cheap with just replacing those three filters twice a year. When I do change them out I'm still at zero TDS but the red light comes on the Spectrapure monitor.

Chucklez, I assume you are on Fountain Water? Never really measured how many gallons I can make, but i go through one sediment filter very 4 or 5 weeks...I guess that would be around 150 also. I'm on Fountain off of HH Rd between Valmeyer and Loo.
