Puerto Rico

Wow, I think we will be eating our way through PR........

Thanks so much for the info.

I was trying to locate the addresses of the fishstores, boy I hope we don't get lost....

Hey Grabriel, im from PR, i just move out to FL a year ago. i will really recomend you to get a scuba diving license. when i was there that was the best way. and it makes the hobby more intresting.

also my LFS will ship to PR. my cousing setup was entirely from here. except for the tank and LR wish was collected in Fajardo by my brother.

PM me. i know some nice places there were you can get about anything. Cuidate!

Just got back. I liked my time in PR, although we had less free time than expected and could not go snorkling or visit any fish stores. We had to work for two full days. The saltwater fish farm was very cool, lots and lots of clown fish, all different species and in all sizes from newly hatched to fully grown. I have some great pictures. Since they had a bad part, we have to come back in a few weeks. I think we will spend time in La Paguera and hopefully go snorkling there, it looked very nice.

You guys sure don't have a shortage on Fast Food restaurants :)

Hi Grouper,
We sure do have a gazillion fast food restaurants here :) lol

If you could post some of those pictures, from the fish farm it would be nice, I'm local and I didn't even now we had a saltwater fishfarm.

If you go to La Parguera there's a great country inn there called Villa Parguera, its restaurant Aquamarina is very good, you should try it. Well have fun. If you need any info just let me know.

Here are some pictures from the farm

Sorry, Pics removed at the request of the business in question. - Anemone

Hi guys. I was wondering if someone had some Chaeto or knew where to buy it. I asked around for it and nobody seems to know/care. Only one store offered to special order it for $50. For algae? No thanks. Am I being cheap?

Any help will be appreciated

Thank You

You're not being cheap. That is a ridicuously high price for chaeto. We have a sandwich bag full for free - you just need to pay for the shipping. Give me your zip code and I can let you know how much the shipping will be. The shipping won't be high.

Hi I live in NY but visit PR on a regular 3X a year. My familly is from Aguadilla. I remember going over to Arecibo just past the highway there was a nice lil reef shop. I dont rember the name I do remeber it was a great shop.

Nice to see Im not the only Puertorican visiting this sit Im from Mayaguez have a 75g FOWLR planning to add some corals pretty soon.

Tambien Im interested in some Chaeto and i would like to know where you guys buy your stuff i usually order thru premiumaquatics excellent service

I'm going to be in Puerto Rico post-cruise later this year. Where is the fish farm? My husband and I would love to visit. That's so cool!

The farm in near Ponce. It is not open to the public I think.
We have to go back in a few weeks to do some more work on their satellite dish. I can ask the manager if he would allow some visitors and let you know then.

It's really exciting to meet other PR reefers here in RC...
I usually buy in Caguas since I live there and prices tend to be lower. In the Caguas area you should check out the following LFS:

Condado Acuatics
A-4 Urb Condado Moderno
Caguas 00725
(787) 744-3960

and

Tropical Reef
Ave. Luis Mu~noz Marin Esq. Jose Garrido
Caguas PR 00725
(787) 744-5170

I've bought most of my live rock in Condado Acuatics - they carry very nice looking LR at a good price. They just go through some spells where they don't have as much livestock. However, when they re-stock it good and at fair prices - specially the inverts.

Tropical Reef usually has a wide variety of fish and corals at reasonable prices. Their staff is very experienced and definitely know their stuff. Specially the technicalities of aquarium system setups.

I have to agree with others that Aquarium Specialties is just flat out expensive (borderline highway robbery). Although I just love their main display tank - the water is so clear that fishes seems to be floating in air.

El Gran Aquarium has a nice store. However, be careful with some of their staff as they are not as experienced. Just make sure you talk to the more senior staff. They sold me a tree sponge and exposed it to the air while bagging it. The poor thing died in my tank a few days later. I later found out that you are not supposed to expose them to the air. That was my cue to research and double check the advice from LFS.

Super Pets is a mega store concept. They do have lots of stuff but don't expect the staff to know much. IMO, prices are not as good as you'd expect from a larger store. The store is always crowded and the saltwater section is too narrow to confortably shop around without stepping on somebody else's foot.

I'll definitely check out the other LFS you guys have posted - some of them are new to me. I'm interested in hearing from other felow PR reefers about the stores they visit. Specially, of any place where you could get corals or rock locally harvested (legally I might add). I've heard somebody talk about a wholesale place in Arecibo but don't have specifics.

Please post your favorite local LFS and your experiences with them. BTW, I'll be more than willing to participate in any local aquarist club. Que ustedes sepan, hay algun club aqui en PR?

Bienvenido atoa! Thanks for the Caguas stores, I'll be checking those out, because I'm not that far away.

Ok as for clubs in Puerto Rico there are 2 of em one in Aguadilla called AAA (Asociacion de Aquarista de Aguadilla) and AAE which I think is Asociacion de Aquarista del Este) they mostly deal with freshwater tanks but some do have saltwater one's but since I lost my love for fresh water I've been more here on RC

Geris,

I PM'd you with directions to el Condado. I am not responsible if you end up in Mayaguez with my directions LoL.

Hola PR Reefers,

Do you guys know anybody that can *reliably* drill holes in a glass tank. Having them drilled will make setup better. I'm just not confident enough to do it myself.

Gracias
