I'm thinking about buying a puffer for my tank, however I'm not sure what it can be housed with. Will they decimate my CUC? How will I remove algae without one?

Depending on the type of puffer, most require a 150 - 300 gallon aquarium and excellent filtration as they are quite the poo factories. Porcupines and all variants of dogface puffers have been some of my favorite fish. They seem to love being fussed with, but might just be tolerating it due to their massive appetites (ie letting you cop a feal for some food). My triggers however loved to be pet with a soft tooth brush after a meal so I can't accuse them of begging.
Crustations are a huge part of their natural diet so I would venture to say you won't have a clean up crew for long.
Regarding algae I'd recommend researching and then buying or building an algae turf scrubber.
My puffers have always gotten along with the usual members of an aggressive tank; triggers, lionfish, morays, stingrays, tuskfisk, large tangs and angels ect.
Research + research * research = success/healthy fish

I have a very limited cuc in my 210, I dose nopox and my algae growth is minimal, so I need some just for the tang and angel to graze. I have a dogface in there and he doesn't bother any of the cuc. I have another tank with juvi triggers and can't have any cuc, I run a refugium and tank algae is minimal. Also if you are going to run leds, make sure they are just blue and white, full spectrum will contribute to algae growth. I ran fowlrs most of 30 years with no cuc, it's not like if you have them you still don't have to clean.

There was no way I thought he was talking about toby, green spotted or sharpnose puffers but I'll be darned if after re-reading it you could be 100% correct.

My blue spotted toby is fine in my 20 gallon frag tank, I throw in a whole frozen clam in every few days but mostly he just feeds on the bigger pods and the mini brittle stars. He will eat probably 1/5 of the clam, then I take it out and give the rest to my snowflake eel. So if those were indeed the ones you were talking about, they are relatively easy and can live in smaller tanks. I do not have him with any snails or CUC, only an algae blenny which he leaves alone, so I cannot say anything about that.
