Pulsing Xenia = GONE !!!!

Yeah Xenia is weird... I have a patch of xenia where the stalks keep fusing together. 2 stalks will combine into 1 bigger stalk, which will then spread and create new xenia stocks, which then combine with each other. Overall, my xenia forest has remained roughly the same size because the rate of combining seems to be about the same as the rate of splitting.

hey guys,

just spotted my xenia coming back, on the rock that it was wiped clean.

would you advice me to move the rock to somewhere else ?

Good light and a ever s light current. Then when healthy again, try it n a little more vigorous current. Nothing to powerful but they need to be cleaned of slime and ave food carried t them too. I'm no Xenia pro, but I could tel you what they don't like rather than what they need to thrive.

Good light, slight current, and slight nutrients what I'd reccomend. I have to get rid of mine because although they are alive, there is too much current ALL OVER my tank to allow them to expand or pulse where I'd want them. As is they look dumb in my SPs tank anyway.

more light and flow faster they grow i had a full forest of it in my tank its was covered went to long without a waterchange went out and 4 hours later it had all melted
all grown back now

I agree chocolate stars eat it quickly but my 6 inch decorator crab had a nice dinner with the choc chip after I was proud of my xenias they where neat.

Xenia melting away!!!!!!

Xenia melting away!!!!!!

Had same problem with Zenia and did a little research. When I first had Zenia and it was doing good and multipling fast (crossing over from rock to rock and new stalks would arise in a week. Everything was great this is when my tank was 6-8 months old. Nitrates about 15, all other parameters good. Then I noticed little by little the Zenia was melting dying whatever, this is when my tank was say 10 months old and Nitrates were consistantly 5 or under. Then nothing it was all gone. Nitrates 0. All other Corals are great. Found this to be interesting and mentioned it to a few other aquarists and basically was told Zenia will strive when nitrates are higher 10 or above and a lot of people put Zenia in their sump to eat the Nitrates up. Well, I like Zenia so I tested it again bought a small piece and put it in my tank again to try it out (Nitrates are still zero) put did direct feeding of zooplex and other foods. After 3 days it was melted away again. Oh well, from some other info on websites same was true again for other hobbists------saying the cleaner the water the harder it is for Zenia. Maybe this helps. Test your Nitrates and see if there low, if so maybe that is your problem too. Mike

If you see some coming back, it is likely that something ate it. I guess all you can do is keep a close eye on it for the possible culprit.

In my aquarium, if I pull some out and leave I cell attached to the rock, it will come back. I am taking 12 stalks to the local reef store on Monday. I can't kill it, it seems. Sorry that you have had bad luck. Be very, very careful what you wish for. Although I love xenia and find it to be one of the most amazing reef creatures, it would quickly overtake my 29gal if not kept in check.

Mine grew like a weed and suddenly disappeared. All parameters were fine. Ca 420, alk 4.5, ph 8.3, etc. It grew so fast it grew onto snails all up the back wall of my tank. I would give it away as fast as I could and it didnt' matter. I'm sure I gave away in excess of 100 stalks.

I have had 2 stalks in my 'fuge for over a year now and they have moved rocks, but they have never multiplied. I am really surprised that they just refuse to split.

Well, to make this Xenia even more totally misunderstood ...

hehe...

My 100g reef tank has zero (undetectable) Nitrates, I do water
changes almost once per year and my alkalinity has fluctuated at times.

9.9 dKH 7-3-02
8.7 dKH 8-10-02
7.0 dKH 9-18-02
6.4 dKH 9-25-02
8.6 dKH 11-25-02
8.0 dKH 1-5-03

(but this is not a quick alkalinity change)

And I've never had a problem with the growth of my xenia. It’s
been in my tank for 4 years and it grows like a weed. I love it
and the way it moves w/ the current… but, I see why some
consider it a nuisance coral and wished they never put it in their tank.

The only thing I add to my tank is kalkwasser.

My current water parameters are: Sp. Grav 1.026, Temp 80^F,
Nitrate 0, Phosphate 0, pH 8.1, Alk 9.3 dKH

My xenia forest is on the right side.

Well, I agree that your ALK has shifted but the entire time it was within the range that it should be.

Mine was too low, (6.0 dKH at one point). My friend had a similar event and increased his ALK too quickly back into range and killed all of his Xenia in a matter of 3 days.

My point is that I believe Xenia is very sensitive to ALK changes (whether it be going too low, or up or down too quickly).

It likes to be in range (probably 8-12dKH), but I've not experimented with high values.

I'm at about 7.5 DKH now and my silver Xenia is fine. Once I get it over 8, I'll get some more White Pom Pom. IME that seems to be the more sensitive type.
