Pulverized Flakes

There was a little talk about feeding larvae with Pulverized flakes (ground to a fine powder in a mortise and pestle) metioned in "Clownfish" the book and other places, just having to pay much more attention to a cleaning regiment obviously has anyone tried this out with a batch of clowns and had any luck?? just curious.

Thanks

I have. It will work, but you need to make sure you REALLY pulverize the flake. Nothing stinks more than to get them past meta, only to watch them choke on food..

My 2 month old ocellaris love the flake now, its their only food at this point. My month old black ocellaris are starting to eat it now too. I mix it in with some BBS feeding and gradually switch to it completely.

And yes, you DO need to be way more attentive to cleaning. Basically, start vacuuming the bottom of the tank, lots of it will sink, and will start to foul the water much quicker than BBS would.

I start mine on flake once past meta. You will probably not have much luck using it as a first food. It might work with some species, but I know it doesn't work for my percs as a first food.

Too big for newly hatched clowns. Wait until day 6 or 7 for most clowns, earlier for Ocellaris. But check out Joyce Wilkerson's book Clownfishes--lots of good info in there including when to feed BBS to which type of clown larvae.

Thanks I have her book that was orignally where I heard about the pulverized flakes method for rearing Larval Clows (in one of the Side bars about some farm in Puerto Rico)
They were using pulverized spirulina from days 1-6 then switching to BBS With at least two vacumings a day :( They suggested trying to use a high quality marine flake and making a powder out of it I think I will try it next time my Clowns Spawn just for the heck of it. Would be a neat experiment, I think much more people would rear Clowns if the Live Rotis were not needed.
I'll let all know

Don't waste you time and get some rotifers

I've followed JW's advice with my ocellaris, starting some pulverized flake (actually, Formula1 & 2 pellets, ground fine) at day 4. And thank goodness for that! My brine shrimp eggs weren't hatching all of a sudden, right when I needed to start them on bbs! They have sailed through metamorphosis on rotifers and crushed dry food (they're 2 weeks, 2 days old)!

This coming from a man with experiance...
Ever Tried it before?
The group out of Purto Rico were even marketing thier stuff (Magic Powder #10,000,345)
I'll most likely try it anyway just to be different and cause I'm stubborn, and lazy :) :wildone:

If you are reffering to the farm in Puerto Rico, I was there when it happened, hence my recomendation. I beleive it is called Addison larval feed, you can get it at Inland Aquatics.

That farm as well as myslef and many others use live rotifers.
