pump comparison -will this one work as well?

Would an Eheim 1262 be able to do the same job as a Mag drive 12 (recommended pump for my setup)?
I need a pump that can push 900- 1200 gallons an hour.
The Eheim says it can push 900- that's at the low end of what I need to run my skimmer. I like Eheims MUCH better than Mag anything,
but don't want to get a pump that is not strong enough to do what I need it to do!
Thanks

whats the skimmer, and can you run an external?

If its a beckett, or downdraft, something like a BlueLine NS800 will destroy either one of those pumps, cost less to buy, and cost less to run.

I don't want to DESTROY either pump :^) too much flow into my skimmer is worse than a little under!
I have a Kent Marine Nautilus EX 24" and it's in the sump already!
The directions recommed the Mag 12 but I think they are a bit noisy.
looking for something along the same flow- I don't need niagra falls!

Scumonkey, its an eductor based skimmer. Basically, the more pressure and water flow you get, the more air it will suck in, and the better it will skim. The Blueline I suggested will work better than either one of those pumps, and will cost you less to run. It only moves 800gph, but is rated at much higher pressure. That being said, the eheim is still a decent choice, althout a little underpowered.

the Mag 12 is an electricity hog.

The NS line of pumps that Champion sales under their Blueline label have been dropped by them. I'm sure they are still around but not under the Blueline name.

I talked to the people at Kent... I was told that using more preasure or flow than whats recommended will NOT make it skim better!
They said it would cause a serious increase in the amount of bubbles causing the skimmer to make tons of very wet foam (not dry as it was designed to) and, remove more water from the system than it should.
So is there another pump out there that is rated about the same as a mag 12 or in the 900-1200 gph range, can be run IN sump, and is quieter and more economical to run? The other pump suggested was the Via Aqua 3600...Ive never even heard of this one! Any thoughts?

Hyperflow, Sen, Sedra, Rio+, Ocean Runner, Gen-X, as well as the Eheims and Mag-Drives all have pumps that are rated within the range you've listed.

I appreciate your response, thank you. What i rather know however, is preferences from people who have used any of these pumps- what they have to say about them- which ones to stay away from.....if they run hot, if it's loud, quite, etc.
which one people feel in general is a better piece of equipment.
I've run FO salt tanks for over 30 years and untill now have never needed this type of equipment. Money is not the problem, (but I would rather not have to rob a bank) I just want to spend wisely and be able to sleep at night!

I think you need to take a chill and listen to Rich. The guy knows what he is talking about. The blueline pump he is talking about will not flow a ton more water, but it is a pressure rated pump (the mag is NOT) and pressure rated pumps perform much better on Beckett and similar skimmers. Just because its pressure rated doesnt mean it moves more water, it just means it is able to handle high head pressure that is put on them by the skimmers. take his advice and get a good pressure rated pump.

In this case, I wouldn't run the eheim. Its less flow (the specs for the eheim are correct at 900gph) and its pressure handling isnt very good (the 1260 handles head-pressure better).

Anyways... that Blueline NS800 is actually 875gph with a max head of 15'. A Mag 12 is 1200gph at 15' shutoff. The head is nearly the same, but the throughput is less. I would go with something slightly higher to match a Mag12. The blueline NS1100 is prolly a better match. It does 1105gph at 18' of head. Even better than that would be a PW-100PX-X It does 1270gph at 13' of head...so its slightly more than a Mag12...but by 5% maybe. A Velocity T4 would be too much (blueline and velocity are made by the same people I think). These are all external though, and I get the idea that you want something that is internal.

There really arent any good Eheim (the closest would be the 1264 which isnt sold in the US) or Oceanrunner pumps that will match to what you need...except for maybe the OR6500. Its rated at 1700gph and 12.6' more flow, but less pressure than a Mag12. You might want to run a "T" on the output with a valve on the other outlet as a 'bypass' in to let off some of the extra flow...but of all the pumps mentioned here, it might be the only one that you can run in the sump and have enough flow for the Kent. That much back pressure might cause it to 'hum' a bit though...and it is a 115watt pump...

I would consider replacing the skimmer all together if I were you...considering the size of the Kent unit, the pump it needs, and the power use. You could easily buy a $199 recirculating Octopus skimmer that would handle the same tank and only use 18watts so you would come out ahead in the long run. Then just sell the Kent unit on ebay.
