Pump failing more...

most know my panworld pump has failed before. well i thought it was kalwassewr clogging it up, but after cleaning it all up and everything (which it ran fine for a few weeks) it has now started failing on a daily basis. and with my octopus skimer, waster level raising causes it to overflow everything back into my sump. Oh its a great situation.

I have some backpressure on the pump, thinking that might help. (i did that by closing off my outlet a tiny bit) but i still have that 90 degree elbow before the intake of the pump. i REALLY dont think thats the issue, because ive been down in teh basement when its failed and i think its something mechanical with the pump. because when i took it apart to clean it and pump it back together, i could almost recreate the issue, but i dont know WHAT is causing this great frustration, but something needs to happen or im going to lose my tank, either by it crashing or me selling it

so i just re-did my plumbing on the intake portion of the pump, and got rid of the 90, meanwhile with the pump off the line, i took the oppurtunity to give it another good scraping of the kalkwasser and clean it up a bit. well, i dropped the impellar and broke one of the wings off. OMG i could have had an out of body experience, but it still works fine.

With all this fun, i hope something changes for me

Brandon, The last time you cleaned it did you completely remove/scrape the buildups? Just curious as you said you took the opportunity just now to do it again. If it's building up that fast something is up. A pump shouldn't be accumulating kalk/mineral buildups that quickly...

Good luck dude... if taking out the elbow doesnt work i think its time to cut your losses and try a different brand

yea its cause im using kalk wasser and it goes into my sump. im thinking that the use of kalk just isnt worth the hassle, and with my coral load it probably barely does anything

man... I'm a heavy kalk abuser and I've never cleaned out/off my ancient Iwaki 100 (which is very similar to Panworld in construction).

perhaps you need to change the method in which you dose the limewater.......

what would you recommend? im currently in an ATO dosing mode, which goes into the sump.

im also worried if im suing too much kalk. i use 5 tblsp to a 5 gal bucket of rodi

The amount your using per gallon isn't the issue unless it's getting added to your sump right at the intake of your pump. I use 2 tblsp. per gallon and have only cleaned my OR6500 twice in the three years i've had it. Is it getting added in a high flow area? Do you let it sit for at least an hour after mixing before it's added to your sump? How fast are you dripping it into the sump???

the chamber that it gets dosed to isnt very high flow, i dose the middle chamber of an almost equally divided chambers of a 55 gallon sump. maybe ill move it up the the last chamber, my return chamber. i dose it using an ATO so at the rate of 5 gallons of rodi every 2 -3 days

i usually dump extra ro water into my sump after filling up my kalk rodi reservoir, so it gives extra time to let the kalk settle out
