I am starting my 40 gallon hex reef tank and was looking for some help. This tank is going to be self contained meaning no external sumps . Iam putting in a false wall to accomodate a pump heater and small skimmer, maybe even a refugium. The help I need is what kind of pump will give me enough flow for this size tank?? Any suggestions will be appreciated. The pump should be no bigger than 5" wide and 8" long. I will soon post pics when I get everything together.

Thanks Apedroza

Can someone recommend what kind of output (GPH) I need for a 40gal Hex. This will be a reef heavy tank. With SPS and maybe some clams.

I was interested in the MAg 9.5 it has the dimensions I need. Does anyone have suggestions on this pump. Willl provide enough flow? Please anyone reply with anyother suggetsions. I ordered my over flow box today as soon as its installed I post a pic.

I'd want at least 30x-40x turnover. Tough to do with a single pump as it would put out too much heat. Closed loop or powerheads (SEIO, Tunze) would be more effective IMO.
Why do you need an overflow if you don't have a sump?

I am taking the idea of a nanocube and section off a section of the tank for heaters and skimming that I don't want to bee seen. I want to make a section of the overflow into a refugium for macroalgae as well. I have everything pictured the way I want it just need to know which pump I should use. Since the MAG 9.5 is similar in size to the MAG 12 I just may go for the 12 and get the extra flow.

Here's an update on my 40 gal Hex. I scrapped the idea of building my own over flow box. My buddy at the my LFS had a used DAS filter box which was perfect for my tank. (after some Tweeking with a dremmel). The box has 4 chamber 2 for filtration, 1 for skimming and one for a heater. I will use one for filtration with LR rubble and the other for the return. The other two will be for the heater and protein skimmer.
