Pump Questions

About how many times should a pump turnover the water in a 210 gallon tank? Also, What king of gph pump would I need. I had a 2328gph pump and it died. Thanks in advance for all input.

It really depends on what you want to keep. You could go as high as 100x turnover if you're talking an SPS dominated tank. And you don't try to get everything from one pump. Pumps from different angles create better randomness.

You also have pressure loss depending on the plumbing distance and number of turns. I have about 3000gph total on my 105g display (3 pumps) but I probably get maybe 20x turnover since one is in the basement, and another one feeds a spray bar to ripple the surface.

I had a seio in there for a while to get me up to 30x but it was too intrusive in the tank. My next system I'm looking for ATLEAST 30x and I'll probably buy some darts to get me there..it depends on what I can afford..I really like the new vortech (I know somebody with a beta) but they are a little pricey.

Kool, The price is not a problem being that I buy whoesale. I wanna run an aggressive Tank, Lion fish, Eels and Stingrays. The pump will be under the 210g stand with a 40gallon sump (that I made). It would have to come up about 6 feet from the sump. What kind of pump will you get for this?

Keep in mind that the GPH ratings on pumps is for when they're going down hill with the wind at their back. Taking into account head and friction, especially the feed tube has any bends, I think you should get a pump that's rated at about 1.5 times the gph you want to attain.

As far as turnover, 10x in between the sump and the display tank is really fine. Any additional can be added via a closed loop. And deciding on what additional gph you need is dependent on what you plan to keep in the tank. If you're doing an aggressive FO, with a Lion fish, etc, you don't need a lot of flow, so 10x out of your sump would be sufficient. You won't need any other flow sources, as long as the way to do the returns gives good flow coverage.

So I'd shoot one return pump rated at around 3,500, like the mag 36 for a submersible, or any of the nice external pumps. A forty gallon sump/refugium seems quite a bit too small for a 210g tank IMO, but its only an opinion.

wow, thanks so much..I thought I was doing good with a 40gal sump. I was happy (for a minute). Kool no biggy, guess I'll have to get a 60gal sump. And I was definately looking at the mags. Thank you so much for only opinions, they always help.

The optimal sump, or at least a reasonable one, would be to plumb the tank down to a basement or utility room, and use a 100 gallon stock tank as a sump/refugium. But that's assuming you have a basement or utility room close by. I have a basement, but not a 210g tank. IMO the 210g is pound for pound the best tank.

Sorry no basement or utility room, just a Tank stand. Maybe, just maybe my neighbor downstairs would le me run a refugium from his house. Thats a good idea..be right back (going to ask him) Thanks.
