Pump Recomendations

Greetings -

I'm considering a main return pump upgrade. I currently have a 125 RR AGA and the return pump I'm using is a submerged Mag 12. After some VERY preliminary investigating I've seen that I might be able to get an external pump with even better electrical efficiency, that will dump less heat into my water, and give me at least the same flow or ideally, I'd like a bit more. The sump is in the stand below the tank, so aside from plumbing losses, the head height is ~3.5' and is split into 2 return lines. I'm guessing that my current (tired) Mag 12 is flowing about 1000 gph, but I didn't really measure that in any way. What external pumps are out there? I'd like no less flow, preferably a bit more, a comparable electrical draw, and quietness. (That last one is important, I don't want it noisier than the Mag, which is pretty quiet)

Am I dreaming, or might such a pump exist?

I now open the floor to suggestions....

Panworld Blueline or Iwaki make some great pumps They come in different sized to suit every need.

Instead of replacing the pump, just put it inline. no heat issues, quiet, and the same as far as electric/waterflow. Also, they recommend that you use a 1" return line to get maximum flow out of a 12. I just plummed a 90 gal tank with a mag 12 using a 1"line and couldn't believe the difference coming from a 3/4" line previously. Just my 2 cents.

The 12 I have now is getting a bit tired, and I was thinking about supplementing it with a 2nd pump, partially for rudundancy, and partially for increased flow.

Thanks for the link and the advice. Do either of you (or anyone else for that matter) have any personal experience with these regarding noise level and vibration?

Well I am currently running a Panworld 200Ps and a Genx mak 4, the noise is bareable What you hear is the cooling fan mosely. My wife hasn't complained as of yet. I was running a mag 18 in sump and I could hear it also

use 1.5" for the mag12, not 3/4" or 1"...to get its full flow(need to double all mags outputs)(*check head loss calc.)

GRI makes great external pumps-IMO

These pumps are known for their ruggedness and reliability as well as their pressure ratings- not their quietness!
Placing a pump on a mouse pad or styrofoam will help quiet them, but if sound levels are a major concern I would look at placing these pumps in a sound proofed (or remote) area.

I've been doing some further research, and I was looking at the specifications of a Poseidon PS4. Anybody have any personal experience with this manufacturer or particular model of pump?

The only pumps I have experience with are Mags and Iwakis. The Iwaki pumps are definitely something to look into as they';re VERY reliable quiet and well made. You pay for the quality, but its definitely there.

I have Poseidon PS4 run my PM Bullet 2 skimmer, I'm very happy with it performance. The only thing that you should be concern is that it put out alot of heat, since it don't have a cooling fan. Other than that it have great presure for such a small pump.

I have an Iwaki WMD30 in a living room now and it is almost too loud... I'm trying to find a new pump to tone down the noise. An Iwaki WMD40 I tried was unbearable... had to take it back....
