Pump submersed or in line?

I always run submersible pumps ...submersed. Again, you have nothing to gain by running it external. No need to over think this.

Yes, ruling out a weak link is a plus. Just because you run a sump doesn't mean you have to increase the risk. Minimize risk no matter which path you choose. That's all I'm saying. Love to all. :)

thank you all very much for the input. I am going to place it in sump. I appreciate all the experince and info.

If you're ever thinking about upgrading the pump run it externally. You can upgrade the pump and use it for everything and lower your temps. I'd much rather use external pumps than submerged ones because they are much better quality. The ehiem pumps go both ways but i'd set it up for external and upgrade if you want.

The only real risk of an external pump is the sump cracking or something from the hole in it. Also even though eheim's are water cooled pumps they should still run cooler setup external. I have a mag 7 pump and the outside is very hot which wouldn't be transferring the heat into the water.

Putting the pump in the sump or not has no real bearing on the possibility of a flood. Most floods will occur due to either the tank drain becoming clogged or restricted and not allowing water to return to the sump fast enough. OR the pump shuts off and the tank drains too much water back to the sump either through lack of siphon prevention or poorly placed returns.

also if your going external i always put a true union ball valve on both end to be able to remove the pump when you need to.

Never thought about that. I am glad you mentioned it.
