I am looking for reccomendations/opinions regarding quiet external pumps for my tank. I have a 96x30x30 mixed reef currently using two super dart gold external pumps, which in my wife's opinioin are unbearably loud. The tank is in our livingroom and I decided to use two pumps because I travel 3 days every week and invariably pumps in the past would always fail when I was out of town. I have been looking at the Red Dragon 12m3, the ATB 3200s and am curious what other large tank owners are using. I have been through Dolphins, Iwaki's, Quiet Ones, Mags, and others... none of those are quiet enough.
Price is no object, there aren't any pumps made that would be more expensive than a divorce!
Appreciate your suggestions and input.

I haven't turned mine on yet but I purchased a red dragon 12m3 for my 475g ish tank (120x30x30)

Since it's in my home theater room it also must be silent..... so I thought I would try the red dragon. I was considering a snapper, snapper gold or snapper 18 & was told they all sound pretty much the same...... got a great price on the 12m3 so I had to give it a try.

Thanks for the response. I have a Red Dragon on my Bubble King skimmer... you can't even tell it's running. Can you share where you got the great price on your Red Dragon?

barracuda

barracuda

I have a dart and a barracuda which is just up from the dart in power....

The barracuda is very powerful and surprisingly quiet I find.....

Two barracudas might be good.....but I am guessing only.

whered you pick that up bro ???

I purchased it from Premium aquatics. I started a thread in their forum asking about pumps & jeremy responded that he had (I think 1) 12m3 for $500 & a 10m3 for $450. I picked up the 12m3 for my tank, couldn't pass up that price. Not sure what else they have available

Not sure if they are a discontinued product or what.....

Are you hearing the actual pump...or vibration noise that you might be able to quiet? Darts are pretty quiet for their size.

II'm fairly certain t's the pump noise itself. I have them on a sound proofing foam platform and each is isolated from any hard plumbing with spaflex. Our house is pretty quiet, hurricane glass windows and doors, I think that's one of the reasons the pump noise is so noticable.
