Pump

I am haveing a new tank built, it is a 72x30x24 (LxWxH) what size pump and what kind do I need? It will be a external pump. Thank you Bruce

depends on what you want it to power. Are you going to run it through a manifold and power other things like a chiller or phosphate reactors? Those will need to be factored in also. How high is it going? from the floor to the tank, or from the basement up to the tank. The amount of head also is different.

You "T" off the return pump and route that line to the chiller and back to the sump. Same would go for reactors. What he was asking regarding the height is actual feet and inches. Pump flow is rated at head level. That head level is how high the pump has to pump up. Whats the height of t5the top of the tank? Will

Its subjective. I use a reeflo hammerhead gold for my return pump but that would be overkill on your tank. Depending on whether you're going to run anything else such as reactors or chillers, I would consider a reeflo dart as they are quiet, powerful and very power efficient. The dart gold would also be worth considering but it has higher flow than the standard dart and would be overkill as well.

Many people like the eheims but at a 6' head, I dont think even their biggest pump would be sufficient. You could always gate a dart down using a valve after the pump without effecting its reliabilty if you find you have too much flow. Iwakis are great pumps but they are noisy, suck power and tend to heat the water up.

Thank you for the replies.

Let me make sure the 3600 gph pump? I think I will use it for the chiller and 2 reactors.

I was thinking Dart, but I ended up going with a Dolphin. I got a used one and took advantage of the companies amazing service policy. I'm returning just under 4000 gallons per hour and only burning 100 watts.

Dolphin Super Amp Master 4200/3600 plumbed with 2" and only 4 feet of head. I just had a brand new abrasive marine seal installed and yes its bairly over 100 watts.

cool - I have had a few Dolphin pumps over the years, and never received the watt draw they reported. I was running (2) in parallel with 3" pipe with 18' of head. And the the marine seal (ceramic) is a nice upgrade to the pump. I did the same with mine.
