im setting up a new sump setup and using a much bigger pump. in my test run the water temp went from about 50 to about 85 in 24 hours with no heat added. the pump is throtled about half way. does anybody have any ideas what it could be?

when you say throttled down do you mean you have a ball valve restricting the flow? if so is the valve before or after the pump?

what kind of pump? what size aquarium? like i said i have 2 mag 12's on my 125 and they are both restricted just the way yours is and i dont have any problems with heat....

im using a hayword pump. its 1 1/2 inch pipe in and out. its pushing like 2600 gph. its to run my 150 100 and all my stuff like skimmer and media chamber

im only testing it right now with fresh water. i dont know how much flow i will need. i am looking in to new pumps though. im getting scared. i will post a pic 2morow

i would def say try a smaller pump.... if you dont get it figured out, im in ithaca alot i could swing to groton and take a look with you

You could try putting a T on the output with a valve and letting water return directly to the sump rather than actually restricting the pump. Not sure if that is really any different though.... also it was 85 out yesterday is your house cooled at all?

yes im running air in the house. i tried opening the flow all the way that didnt help. next i will try to cool the pump with air and see if that helps. the pump is in my cool basment running if that helps. i think i will not be able to run this pump and get another one. thanks for all the help everyone.

Try a reeflo Dart Kyle it pumps around 3600 GPH and at $230. it is a great deal and is as quiet as a church mouse...
