Purigen stronger than I thought :(

My tank just recovered from me bleaching them with a bulb exchange even though I used some screen. (old XM 20k to 14k phoenix) Should have taken it slower. Finally had the screen off and everything going good for a couple weeks. Then the fatal mistake. This week I decide to recharge my purigen because I havent done it in about a year. Put it back in and the next day I start seeing bleaching again. Cut my photoperiod back but got worse the next day. Screen back on :mad2: Im never going to get this screen off:) I use a little rox .8 carbon and change it out about every two weeks so I didnt think there would be any issues. Anyone else ever see this with purigen?

Did you let it soak for 24 hours in a Prime/ water solution after soaking it for 8 hours in bleach water?

I have used it for years and never saw this. that said, i always over did it with the prime after I soaked it in the bleach.

What systems do you use it on? Do you think there is any benefit to using Purigen vs. activated carbon? On average, how long does it last before needing a recharge? (Thinking of buying a bag for my skimmerless 29).

Yeah, I did soak it in prime and then I always let it sit in just rodi for a few days before putting it back.

Most people like to use both. It turns brown when it needs to be recharged. Usually 3-6 months.

Sounds good, I was reluctant to try it on my 29 since the bag I bought to run on another system (only 15g) browned in 1 week. Polished the water crazy clean though.

Ha yeah if there are alot of organics it changes quick. I recharged a bag a few times and wanted to see if it still worked so I put it in my pond.
Within a day it was dark dark brown, never saw it that dark before.

I had a baggie on my 75. recharged it about every 3-4 months or so. I cannot find the dang baggie for my 180. grrr... then again I may need a bigger baggie ;-)

I used it and never saw any benefits what so ever. Also never turned brown. I ditched it and never looked back.

Im sure "most people" know what I'm saying;) What I was saying was that most people who use purigen also use carbon.

I am one of the "most people" you refer to
been using the double act of Purigen and Carbon for 2 years or so now

Purigen lasts about 4 months for me before needing to be regenerated
I have 2 pouches that I alternate, so I can leave in the sun for a few weeks after the soaking to be 100% sure its bleach free whilst the other one is in the system
